West Virginia is the only U.S. state located entirely within Appalachia, an eastern U.S. region encompassing the Appalachian Mountains and surrounding counties. A predominantly rural state, with 80% of its mountainous terrain covered by forest, West Virginia’s transportation infrastructure is challenged by both topography and funding.

Helicopter maintenance organizations often struggle with finding strong leaders. Not only is there a deep shortfall of qualified maintenance technicians and engineers, but often current employees tapped for leadership roles have little to no leadership experience outside a strong knowledge of the organization and work. The quality of leadership in any helicopter operation can make or break a company. Poor leadership can lead to costly mistakes, employee burnout, attrition, and lost income.

When a 79-year-old woman veered off the road and down a steep slope while driving through the countryside of Moutier, Switzerland, she was left unconscious in her wrecked vehicle, which was completely hidden from view. Due to heavy snow accumulation in the area, locating the woman using traditional search methods would have proven extremely difficult. Aboard a Swiss Air-Rescue Rega helicopter, crews were using CENTUM’s Lifeseeker system.
