Jen Deaderick has written about gender and citizenship for the New York Times, the Huffington Post, Experience, and Dame. She is also a regular contributor on WGBH’s news show, Greater Boston.

Since 2008, she has run the largest Equal Rights Amendment page on Facebook. In 2012, she founded the #UseThe19th campaign, which encouraged women to get out and vote. In 2017, she took over the social media for A is For, an abortion rights organization founded by Martha Plimpton and other artists.

I spent a crazy amount of money on skin care products yesterday. Like, a bonkers amount. It’s stuff that will last a while, so I can break it down into monthly amounts in my head and feel sort of like it was sane, but really it wasn’t. I was far too vulnerable to a young, hard-selling woman who told me I deserved to look beautiful and gently rubbed things into my face. It’s fine, really. Last night, though, I started crying thinking about how needy I was lately for that sort of caring. How raw I am.

It was my birthday last week. Fifty-three! I keep forgetting I’m in my fifties. I turned fifty during the lockdown. I had a party. People wore masks and sat in my yard at a distance. It was actually really fun. Still, it didn’t feel real because of the strange liminal nature of the lockdown. It happened in a parallel time. Or maybe it’s just weird to be getting older. In my forties, I could always feel like I was just out of my thirties, but now there’s a numerical gap of a whole decade.

Well, I’ve decided against going all-paid, after considering it for a bit. I really love having this be open for anyone to read, with people having the option to pay if they can. I get really tired of having to monetize everything. It’s the only way to make even close to a living as a writer, but it isn’t fun. Asking for money is sort of embarrassing. I’ve had people tell me to “get a job” in reaction to my public requests, as if writing isn’t a job.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I suppose it was in high school when I interviewed a fellow student who had drawn a picture of Doug Flutie. I don't remember why it was news.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Hildy Johnson, of course! The Rosalind Russell version. For her savvy and her hats.

Why did you become a journalist?

It kind of just happened. I was curious about things and people asked me to write about them.
