My therapist turned on the overhead light, and I winced. I had been sitting in the dark wearing a pair of aviator sunglasses that were too big for my face. Small pieces of ripped tissue were wedged in my ears. “I know I look insane,” I blurted out. “But I’m starting to get a migraine.” I rarely get migraines. But when I do, light and sound literally hurt. They send jolts of pain through my body, and every bright light or loud word feels like a personal attack against my skull.

I smiled sheepishly at my therapist. She had just asked whether I had done my “homework.” In this case, my assignment was to join Gilda’s Club, a support community for people affected by cancer. After surviving stage three cancer, I wanted to meet other survivors — and, more broadly, begin rebuilding my social circle. “I signed up,” I told her. “But when the day came… I didn’t go.” To my surprise, she still congratulated me. Signing up was a step, she said, even if I hadn’t made it through the door.

I checked my phone again. And again. Still… nothing. I had just made a new friend. We exchanged phone numbers, smiled, and said we should get together soon. Then we went our separate ways, and I never heard from her. At first, I told myself it was fine. I’m an introvert, after all. I don’t need as much “people time” as more extroverted people do. And she was probably just busy. But eventually, I realized what was really happening: I was falling back on one of my old safety behaviors.
