The Impacts of Southwest Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclones on Transient Weather in Réunion

1 Introduction An estimated 80 tropical cyclones (TCs) are formed globally each year (Schrek et al. 2014; Sobel et al. 2021). The southwest Indian Ocean Basin (SWIO) experiences around 20 TCs while the north Indian Ocean basin experiences around 10 cyclones annually (Chiacchio et al. 2017). The expansion of the Hadley Cell may result in an expansion of the area in which TCs occur (Defforge and Merlis 2017; Bieli et al. 2019).

Abstract The Maloti-Drakensberg is an important region of plant biodiversity and endemism, and a strategic regional water source. In mountains, climate, geography and geology promote environmental heterogeneity, with numerous microhabitats supporting high species diversity. The ‘Mountain Kingdom’ of Lesotho is largely reliant on subsistence agriculture. For a decade, shrubs have been cleared from these alpine grasslands to increase herbaceous grazing capacity for livestock.
