The First Lady of Colors
A group of senior women recently approached Suzi Weiss-Fischmann after a speaking engagement, whispered “a little guilt under the kilt,” and walked away giggling. As odd as this encounter may seem, it is common for Weiss-Fischmann, the co-founder of OPI Products. A Little Guilt Under the Kilt is just one of the many creative names her company’s nail polish colors carry. “I laughed to myself all the way home that night,” Weiss-Fischmann says.
NURTURING PEOPLEHOOD
“Fiddler on the Roof” fans and anyone who can hold their own playing “Name that Tune” can tell you the importance of tradition. But Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman has a different take on this age-old idea: “Jews have inherited a 3,000-year-old tradition, but all that does is put you in a museum. It isn’t a good reason why someone would choose to be Jewish today.” Like the beloved character, Tevye, Rabbi Hartman contemplates Jewish traditions and the role they play in Jewish life.

HARTFORD >> Noting that 60,000 Connecticut children have been exposed to the toxin lead – and that more than 2,000 have levels high enough that they are lead-poisoned — U.S. Reps. Rosa DeLauro and Elizabeth Esty unveiled a bill Monday to help homeowners make their homes safer and better protect children.“We cannot kick the can down the road and hope the problem goes away.

Nearly 1,400 new cases of lead-poisoned children under age 6 were reported in Connecticut in 2015, a slight drop from the year before, but more children showed higher levels of poisoning. A child whose blood test shows 5 micrograms of lead per deciliter or higher is considered poisoned. The 2015 numbers show 98 new cases of children with lead levels of 20 micrograms or higher, four times the threshold number and a 32 percent jump from 2014.

“We cannot kick the can down the road and hope the problem goes away. It will not,” DeLauro, a Democrat who represents the 3rd Congressional District, said at a press conference at the New Haven Health Department. In a May 7 story, C-HIT reported that figures from the state Department of Public Health show that tens of thousands of children are being regularly exposed to lead paint and lead dust – and that tens of thousands of children are not being properly tested for exposure to the toxin.

Omro resident Jill Larson first performed with puppets as part of a ministry at her church. She soon learned that her audience (especially children) often felt a special connection to the characters and stories she helped to create there. Jill began exploring the possibility of a career in puppetry, but wanted to come up with an approach that would “travel light” and be easy to present in a variety of settings and venues.
