Oh Look, They Arrested Michael Avenatti
Michael Avenatti (Photo by Jennifer S. Altman/For The Washington Post via Getty Images) Getting arrested right outside of your own disciplinary hearing is the definition of exiting the frying pan into the fire. Yesterday, 2018 Lawyer of the Year Michael Avenatti appeared before the state bar to discuss the charge that he pilfered $840K from a client’s settlement funds for personal use. Little did he know when he headed out that he wouldn’t be returning home.

The Latest Brew In Britney Spears’s Conservatorship
(Photo by David Becker/Getty Images) Britney Spears has been in the news this week for two reasons. The first involves a viral tweet revealing the coffee machine, Delonghi Magnifica, brewing to what sounds like her hit song Stronger. Less obtuse? The injunction her father, Jamie Spears, just won against a blogger who has vociferously opposed Spears’ conservatorship.
What’s A Firm Breakup Without A Few Blackmail Allegations?
Firm breakups can get ugly, but when New York attorney Frank Eskesen’s former firm started to break up, he says his former partner took it to new heights by straight-up blackmailing him in a bid to secure somewhere between $1 and 1.5 million.
The Top Above The Law Stories Of The Last Decade (Sort Of)
Technically the decade doesn’t end until December 31, 2020. That said, no one is looking to Above the Law to be the sort of obnoxious gunner who points out something so wildly pedantic. Let’s just lean back and celebrate the common parlance end out the 2010s with a look back the top stories we’ve put out over the first full decade of Above the Law coverage. Why is this a “sort of” list?
Overcoming Martyrdom As A Mother And A Lawyer
Ed. note: This is the latest installment in a series of posts on motherhood in the legal profession, in partnership with our friends at MothersEsquire. Welcome Jennifer Kleier to our pages. Not long ago, a friend shared an example with me that she believes illustrates the difference between mothers and fathers. The example went something like this: There is only one piece of cake left and three children.
Small-Firm Lawyer Tells Biglaw Team To ‘Eat Bowl Of Dicks’ During Settlement Negotiations
Generally, when opposing counsel tells you to “eat a bowl of dicks,” you know that your settlement talks are going nowhere fast. When opposing counsel later informs you that he’s going to “let the long dick of the law f*ck [your client],” then you know that something may be amiss. When opposing counsel then begins to refer to you as a “cumstain” and a “limp dick mother f*cker,” you may realize that your settlement talks have gone completely off the rails.
Be Patient. Use Your Judgment
Litigation can take a long time such that there can be a tendency to rush those few things that you can. Don’t. Take the time you need to make the best judgment call, even if that sometimes means waiting. Every client, at every sophistication level, can be shocked (or at least disappointed) by just how long it takes to resolve a dispute. Yes, federal court is generally faster than state court (generally). And arbitration is generally faster than court (generally).
Software For Your Small Firm: The Low Down On Your Options
Running a law firm is no small feat. Juggling day-to-day administrative tasks with the practice of law can be challenging, at best. And the more employees you have, the more complicated it becomes to manage your law firm. That’s where legal software comes in. It helps to organize and streamline your law firm’s data and processes, while also providing increased visibility into the daily activities of all of your firm’s employees. Sounds great in theory.
