It can be easy to ignore the denial of humanity and dignity for those whom we don’t know. But for both of us, this is personal. From our family members being refugees or working at a resettlement agency, we both have seen firsthand what it means for a family to escape war, famine, and persecution to rebuild their lives in America. I’ve had the privilege to serve Fairfield and Southport for nearly four years. During my tenure, I hear regularly from seniors who want to downsize and stay in our community, residents whose children want to return home after college or a few years working elsewhere, and people who have gone through a divorce and want to remain near their kids but can’t find anywhere to live.

Although the title of Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg’s latest book “Miriam’s Well: A Modern Day Exodus,” nods at the Bible, this novel’s contemporary protagonist is at most a very loose interpretation of her ancient namesake. The modern Miriam’s journey to self-discovery is as much or more formed by her experience of a mid-20th-century landscape of tumultuous change and unrest, as it is by spiritual or cultural Judaism.
As the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, Rachel Black’s life has been shaped and weighted by her grandparents’ narrative. Black will share pieces of this narrative in her keynote speech at the State of Kansas Holocaust Commemoration next month. One of these narrative pieces will focus on her grandparents’ love story and how her grandfather saved her grandmother’s life after her grandmother was shot by Nazis following an escape from a train bound for the Treblinka death camp.
