Tell us about your journey as a designer. I decided I would be an artist one day at the end of fifth grade. I had wanted to be an author for a very long time, and then one day, I thought, ‘I could probably do the drawing part, too.’ And then I just did it and never looked back. Some people are born with it, but I didn’t have an innate talent; I had to study from that point on to be the artist that I am. My dad bought me a couple books on drawing and the rest is history.

How did you get your start as a DJ? Was music an important part of your life growing up? Music was definitely a part of my day-to-day life at home. My dad was a musician and could sing, we had a bunch of CDs and records, and we were in dance classes and choir and those types of things.

Hilda Andres, executive director of the Foundry Art Centre in historic St. Charles, grew up in Lebanon and moved to the United States to attend college. She studied interior design at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she met her husband, an architecture student. Over the years, as they built a life together, they moved multiple times for professional reasons. In each new community, Andres found herself searching for a place of belonging and enrichment.
