I'm a Lowell Thomas award-winning Toronto-based journalist and travel writer who freelances for a variety of publications. I'm also the Canada editor of Utah-based National parks Traveler. I'm currently writing the Jasper National Park and Icefields Parkway chapter of a Lonely Planet national parks guidebook. What was your first job as a journalist?

Unpaid intern @ the Toronto Sun for a few weeks as a requirement to graduate. It led to a summer gig that launched my career

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes I've been around long enough to have used typewriters at university.

How is social media changing news?

Facebook is my new "newspaper." I read whatever bubbles up thanks to what my friends are posting.

My photo of Old Hands, an Indigenous healer, won third place in the SATW Canadian Chapter Awards in the Best People Photo category. I photographed Old Hands at a Vancouver hotel during a smudging ceremony.

North American Travel Journalists Association

2018 - Travel Series, Destination Travel, Intergenerational and Family Travel

I won three awards from the North American Travel Journalists Association in 2018 for stories published in the Toronto Star in 2017. A package of my Canada 150 stories won gold for travel series in a print publication. I won silver in Destination Travel for a story about my polar bear walking safari in Manitoba. And I won silver in the Intergenerational and Family Travel category for a story about a dinosaur dig in Wyoming.

2014 - Compilations

My Toronto Star Cookbook: More Than 150 Diverse & Delicious Recipes Celebrating Ontario (Appetite by Random House) was a finalist in the Compilations category of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) awards in 2014. It was the only Canadian book on the finalists' list that year.
