Block Club Chicago is hiring a News Editor with a passion for community journalism to help with breaking news, enterprise reporting and guiding reporters in their coverage of Chicago’s neighborhoods. We’re looking for an editor who understands what Chicagoans care about, from the big (DNC coming to town) to the small (a beloved neighborhood business closing).

Block Club Chicago, a nonprofit news organization focused on Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods, is looking for a full-time reporter to cover Lakeview, Lincoln Park and Old Town. As a beat reporter for this group of neighborhoods, you’ll be expected to cover everything from local school council meetings and breaking news to restaurant openings and real estate developments. Night meetings are common. This is not a 9–5 job (though it is typically Monday-Friday).

CHICAGO — At Wendell Green Elementary School on Chicago’s South Side, three girls studied a subtraction problem on the dry erase board. The answer would tell their combined third and fourth grade class how many rooms were vacant in an imaginary hotel. How much is 224 minus 176? The girls quickly realized they had to subtract seven from two in the middle column. How’s that possible if seven is bigger than two?
