Homo luzonensis and the role of homoplasy in the morphology of hominin insular species
Introduction The evolution and phylogenetic relationships of our own genus, the genus Homo, are a matter of intense debate. The definition of the genus itself, notably regarding the boundary between the paraphyletic genus Australopithecus and the genus Homo, is far from settled (Strait and Grine, 2004; Collard and Wood, 2015; Villmoare, 2018).

Developmental models shed light on the earliest dental tissues, using Astraspis as an example
While vertebrate mineralized skeleton is composed of a large diversity of mineralized tissues (Sire et al. 2009; Vickaryous & Sire 2009), it is mainly constituted of osseous tissues, dentine, enamel and intermediate tissues such as enameloid (Hall 2015). Osseous tissues constitute bones, whereas ‘dental’ tissues, such as dentine, enamel and enameloid, mainly compose teeth and odontodes (‘tooth-like structures’).
