How data can help to guide NIH funding policy

The world’s largest funder of biomedical research, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), has decades’ worth of data on grant applications, peer-review results, funding outcomes and publications. Using such data to guide NIH policy could offer insights and help to address inequities. It would align with the “radical transparency” promised by the US health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, under whose purview the NIH falls.

CORRESPONDENCE 16 September 2025 By the start of August, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) had awarded billions of dollars less in research grants this fiscal year than in previous ones (see go.nature.com/46as8rp). The impoundment of funds that the US Congress designated for support of science and medical research endangers US investments in people, projects and health advances.
