Evaluating Minnesota United's Remaining Schedule
Image courtesy of Minnesota United As the calendar turns to September, the Major League Soccer season draws closer to its playoff selection. Minnesota United, now clear of their easiest remaining fixture by table position with a comfortable 3-0 win at Allianz Field on Wednesday over Colorado, have nine games remaining to solidify a playoff position, or to collapse their way out. The journey begins with one of three remaining trips to California this weekend to play the San Jose Earthquakes.
Hlongwane Leaves Early as Minnesota United Top NYCFC 2-0
Image: Minnesota United A road win is ALWAYS a good thing, right? Minnesota United went to Citi Field in Queens, NY Sunday night and came away 2-0 victors over NYCFC in the return to MLS play for both teams following the past month’s Leagues Cup. While any team in any league will take a multi-goal victory away from home, this one came with a potential price for the Loons.
MNUFC2 Top St. Louis City 2 in Shootout
Image: MNUFC2 After playing to a 2-2 draw in regulation at the NSC Sunday night, MNUFC2 earned a shootout win over St. Louis City 2, taking the extra point by putting away four of their five attempts from the penalty spot. “Every time we’ve played [St. Louis], it’s been a good game so we didn’t expect anything less this time,” said MNUFC2 head coach Cameron Knowles. “Our first half, a lot of goals and in the second half, a really good battle from both teams.
Minnesota United Routed in Nashville, Bounced from Leagues Cup in Quarterfinals
Image: Minnesota United Minnesota United went into Nashville’s GEODIS Park Friday evening with aspirations of a Leagues Cup semifinal berth and a step toward an automatic 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup spot. Unfortunately, an early red card to D.J. Taylor and five Nashville SC goals, all in a 30-minute span, were more than enough to send the Loons out of the tournament in dominant fashion. “Our defending was so poor at times,” said MNUFC manager Adrian Heath.
Checking the Vibes as MNUFC Chases a Trophy
Image courtesy of Minnesota United Minnesota United have officially entered new territory, as each of the teams in the inaugural edition of the Leagues Cup quarterfinals has done. It’s time to see how things sit, and how close the Loons are to a different piece of history. For Minnesota, this is the third time in club history that they have been within three games of a trophy; the previous two, of course, ended in failure.
The New Home for Minnesota's Serious Ballers

It’s 7 a.m. on a late-July Tuesday and Fernbrook Fields, the sports facility across the road from Maple Grove High School and feet away from Maple Grove’s Crimson Stadium, is hosting a unique gathering of athletes. Summer mornings don’t exactly seem like the usual time for a casual summer workout, but the Serious Ballers aren’t interested in casual.
MNUFC Advance to Leagues Cup Quarterfinals with PK Victory Over Toluca
Image: Minnesota United FC Following a thrilling (and life-shortening) PK shootout victory over Columbus Crew in the Leagues Cup round of 32, Minnesota United fans returned to Allianz Field Tuesday for “sweet 16” matchup against another LIGA MX foe, Toluca FC. Once again, the match couldn’t be settled after 90+ minutes.
Three Things from MNUFC's Leagues Cup Win in Columbus
Image: Minnesota United FC Minnesota United did something a lot of people thought they wouldn’t do Friday night, go into Columbus and come away still alive in the 2023 Leagues Cup. Another brace from Bongokuhle Hlongwane, some PK heroics from Dayne St. Clair, and the ultimate match-winner from Micky Tapias were enough for the Loons to survive, topping the crew 4-3 in a shootout following a 3-3 stalemate after 90 minutes.

Minnesota United Bring Back Ján Greguš in Deadline Deal
Image: Minnesota United FC After signing a new DP striker, experienced winger, and young fullback, Minnesota United looked to be set with the deals they had already made in this year’s summer transfer window. However, following a season ending injury to Kervin Arriaga, the Loons decided to get in on the action ahead of Wednesday night’s deadline, bringing in a very familiar face. The club announced Thursday defensive midfielder Ján Greguš will be rejoining the squad in a trade with Nashville SC.
Kervin Arriaga to Miss Remainder of Season with Torn Meniscus
Image: Travis Gallipo Photography Well, this is certainly not the news Minnesota United fans were hoping to start the day with. Loons’ midfielder Kervin Arriaga has suffered a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee and is set to undergo surgery in the coming days, meaning his 2023 season is over. Nagging knocks caused the Honduran to suffer a drop in form late last season after becoming one of the team’s most crucial pieces shortly after his signing ahead of the 2022 campaign.
MNUFC Advance to Leagues Cup Knockout Stage Despite 3-2 Loss to Chicago
Image: Minnesota United FC The Chicago Fire defeated Minnesota United 3-2 Thursday evening in a second-half thriller featuring five goals and a 34-minute weather delay at Allianz Field. Loons winger Bongokuhle Hlongwane netted a brace for the second-consecutive match, but the South Africa international’s heroics were not enough to see them through to the final whistle. “Obviously incredibly disappointed,” MNUFC head coach Adrian Heath said.

Have MNUFC Flipped a Switch? Three Things from a Leagues Cup W
Image: Minnesota United FC Minnesota United FC pummeled LIGA MX side Club Puebla 4-0 Sunday evening at Allianz Field. The contest was the opening group stage match of the inaugural 2023 Leagues Cup, a competition between MLS and LIGA MX for a chance at some cash and a Concacaf Champions Cup spot in 2024. The Loons dominant performance came on the heels of a brace from both Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Emanuel Reynoso, despite playing with 10 men for the final 61 minutes of the match.
Reynoso, Hlongwane Steal the Show as 10-Man MNUFC Dominate Leagues Cup Opener
Image: Minnesota United FC Is there any doubt now how Minnesota United are approaching the Leagues Cup? Braces from both Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Emanuel Reynoso lifted the Loons to a dominant 4-0 win over Liga MX’s Club Puebla in their first match of the inaugural competition Sunday night at Allianz Field. Oh yeah, and three of those goals came after losing Michael Boxall to a red card. “I thought the players were magnificent. I’m really proud of them,” said MNUFC manager Adrian Heath.
What is Minnesota United's (and MLS') Perspective On The Leagues Cup?
Image: Travis Gallipo Photography The Leagues Cup begins tonight, with a dream fixture: Inter Miami, also known as FC Barcelona Old Boys, against Cruz Azul. This is not the only game tonight, nor is the Leagues Cup a new competition, but from a league attention perspective, you wouldn’t know about either of those things.

Minnesota United Draw LAFC 1-1 in Front of Record Crowd at Allianz Field
Image: Travis Gallipo When Minnesota United and Los Angeles Football Club get together in Saint Paul, there’s only one score-line that can come out of the matchup. Saturday night marked the fifth time in as many matches at Allianz Field that the Loons and LAFC played to a 1-1 draw. Even with the point against the defending MLS Cup Champions, it can definitely feel like a missed opportunity to get a much-needed road win ahead of a break in league play.
The First Appearances of Teemu Pukki
Image: Minnesota United The buzz around Teemu Pukki’s move to the United States and into the jersey of Minnesota United has been building for weeks, and this week saw the buzz turn into reality with Pukki’s signing, first appearance, first start, and even first goal in Wednesday evening’s 3-0 win in Houston. That buzz of “could this finally be the one” has justifiably not gone anywhere with Pukki’s first 94 minutes in Minnesota in the books.
