Kansas candidates and the party affiliation of voters are set now that a June 1 has passed. The cutoff ended the process of deciding what candidates are on the primary ballot this year. And prospective voters chose the party they want to be affiliated with for the Aug. 4 primary election. In primary elections, Republicans vote for Republican candidates only. Democrats vote for Democrats. Unaffiliated voters can stay independent past the June 1 deadline.

With $31.6 million in federal food assistance again flowing to 86,000 Kansas households, area food banks working to keep people fed during the government shutdown can rest a bit easier this weekend. But not that easy. As long as uncertainty plagues the aid program, food banks and other nonprofits are expecting increased demand. And they’ll be asking for more canned food donations and financial contributions from the public.
