Walkin' the Talk
If our Creator wanted us to have unlimited free energy, our Creator would have put a giant fusion reactor in the sky. President Biden and our congressmember, Salud Carbajal, aren’t just talking about the giant switch to clean energy, they’re doing a lot to get us there. The wind farm Salud has begun off our county’s northern coast and the electric-car charging stations President Biden is installing along our roads across our country are going to be a great additional start.
Taking Away Established Rights
The far right’s mistrust of our elections is a ploy to make decades-long fair and trusted elections unfair in their favor. They tried to take away certifying our national elections with violence, murder, and assault of our patriotic police. They limit women’s health care and reproductive rights. They want to defund Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Restrict easy access to vote on only one day instead of expanding it to four days.
The Santa Barbara Independent
Some faiths admit they don’t know if life begins at conception or not. There are faiths that believe that life begins at conception and others that believe it begins at birth. Science hasn’t proven yet, that it begins at conception. Are the Supreme Court justices engraving their religious or unscientific assumptions into our laws? Separation of church and state is in our Constitution. Who is bullying who? Login Please note this login is to submit events or press releases.
The Wages of Lies
Every four years January 6th is one of our proudest days of the year for all Americans, like apple pie on the 4th of July. It’s when all Americans’ votes are certified by respected members of Congress to elect our next President of the United States, an office of honor and worldwide respect. However, Vladimir Putin said a few years ago, “America isn’t as strong as it thinks it is.” What did he mean? Now we know.
Earth to Democrats
I’m from the Midwest, and I think Democrats will help Middle America vote for them if they push for a $10 federal minimum wage and tie it to inflation rises. Middle America won’t be for a $15 an hour minimum wage. In pushing for a $15 an hour federal minimum wage, the Democrats will keep pushing Middle America to vote for Republicans again. Only some parts of our more wealthy coastal states can afford to pay a $15 an hour minimum wage. Be succinct, constructive, and relevant to the story.
Smoked Beef Stew
What elevates ordinary beef stew to extraordinary? Add some glorious wood smoke! Here's a beef stew with smoked beef. Get your smoker up to temp, around 240°. Cube the beef into about 1 inch cubes. Place in a foil pan in a single layer, and pour in just enough beer for the bottom half of the meat to sit in it. Season the top layer with salt and pepper. Smoke on full smoke for 1 1/2 hours. In the meantime, add the other ingredients to a slow cooker with whatever beef stew seasonings you like to use.
Cider Roasted Pulled Pork
This month we've been featuring some great recipes with beer in honor of the Northeast Wisconsin Craft Beer Festival coming October 7th. While I typically prefer to smoke pork butts for pulled pork, this is a great recipe for making it in the crock pot. Apple and pork are naturally delicious together, so I decided to roast the pork in an Irish cider. The recipe is simple. Put it in the crock pot before leaving for work and you'll have delicious pork for dinner.

Brunswick Stew | 94.1 Duke FM
I love smoking meat, but one of the challenges is that there is always lots of left over meat. Here is a recipe that works great with any kind of smoked meat: Brunswick Stew. Here's what you'll need: 2 cups pulled smoked meat (I used pork) 1 cup chicken broth 1 14oz can fire roasted diced tomatoes, undrained 1 can great northern beans 1/2 cup frozen whole kernel corn 1/4 cup barbecue sauce of your choice 1/4 tsp black pepper Combine all ingredients in a Dutch oven.
Lazy Cookie Bars
These are the easiest bars you'll ever make. I made two pans - one chocolate with peanut butter chips, and one yellow cake with M&Ms. It's SO Easy... 1 box cake mix of your choice 2 eggs 5 Tbsp melted butter Mix-In of your choice The batter will be just like paste, but don't let that worry you. Bake at 350° for 20 min. Do not over bake!
Smoked Meat Loaf
This week is a good reminder that pretty much anything you can make in the oven, you can make in the smoker... And add that delicious wood smoke flavor. This weekend I was in the mood for meatloaf. The recipe here is not my usual meatloaf, but it was very tasty. Meatloaf can get to go if you over mix it, so I like to mix all the other ingredients together first, then fold it into the meat. When done form it into a loaf.
Bourbon Cherry Smoked Pork Tenderloin
I love smoking pork tenderloin. It's fast cooking, and it takes on other flavors well. Here is a great version with some Door County Cherries. Start with the pork tenderloin. Rinse it with cold water and towel it dry. Then, rub it all over with yellow mustard and sprinkle liberally with your favorite rub. Â Here's mine . Set your smoker up for 230. And make sure your water reservoir is full. Smoke the pork on full smoke for about 2 hours until the internal temperature reaches 145.

Creole Chicken Breasts
If you are looking for a spicy option for chicken on the grill, try these beauties. Mix the Cajun seasoning, salt, and pepper. Brush the chicken with olive oil and sprinkle with the Cajun mix. Preheat the grill to medium high heat. Cook the breasts for about 5 minutes. Combine the mustard and honey. Brush the chicken breasts with the honey mustard about a minute before the breasts are done. Let the chicken rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Apple Pie Cheesecake Bars
For Bake Someone's Day this week, I made some Apple Cheescake bars. The recipe was from one of those little cookbooks you find in line at the grocery store. It was called Fall Baking. In a large bowl, add the cookie mix and cut in the stick of butter using a pastry knife or two butter knives. Combine until the mixture is like coarse pebbles. Reserve 1 1/2 cups of the mixture, and press the rest into a greased 9x13 pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Then let cool for about 20 minutes.

Pork Spare Ribs | 94.1 Duke FM
I always like to look for new ways to make ribs. The cooking process is always similar, but I like to change up the rubs, sauces, etc to see how it affects the flavor. These ribs ended up a bit spicy, but very delicious. Here's what you'll need for the rub: Mix the ingredients together, rub on ribs, then wrap them in plastic wrap and put them back in the refrigerator for anywhere from 4 hours to overnight. The longer the better.

Whack a Bench
Moving the benches on State Street to adjacent streets, perpendicular to State Street, 60 to 100 feet from State Street, would encourage the panhandlers to sit there, off of State Street. To make it even more inviting to sit there all day, like they do on State Street today, would be to put shade roofs over these benches. They would see we are encouraging them and welcoming them to sit there in shaded comfort and aim their signs at the shoppers 60 to 100 feet away, passing by.

The Beer and Wine of Drugs
Why legalize pot? For the same reasons most bars in Carpinteria can’t serve anything stronger than beer and wine. Marijuana is the beer and wine of drug families. It is much weaker and much less harmful than all the other popular and commonly used legal and illegal drugs. Legalizing it will cause stronger drugs to be used less often because the much weaker alternative will become more popular. Legalizing it will also put a lot of drug dealers out of business and end their tax-free source of income.
Wage Stage
Most of the food service workers downtown serving our beloved tourists earn minimum wage every year. Our low-income workers waited two long years for our beloved governor to raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour. Will our City Council raise the minimum wage in Santa Barbara to $12 an hour this year, instead of waiting for seven more long years to raise it to the livable wage of $15 an hour?
