Concluding remarks PEMFCs have received growing attention as a renewable energy power source. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made toward developing non-PGM ORR electrocatalysts in PEMFC, especially for heterogeneous M–N–C materials. We first highlighted recent advances in M–N–C catalysts from the viewpoint of atomic-level understanding of mononuclear active site and porous structure effect on the fuel-cell performance.
