Global estimation of bankfull river discharge reveals distinct flood recurrences across climate zones
13 hours ago One of the country’s largest reservoirs hit a record-low surface elevation over the weekend, prompting concerns about critical water and electricity supply for several states, including California. Lake Powell, located on the Arizona-Utah border, dropped to a surface-level elevation of 3,519.91 feet …
Global estimation of bankfull river discharge reveals distinct flood recurrences across climate zones

Abstract Bankfull discharge, the maximum flow a river can convey before spilling over its banks, is central to modelling flood risk and understanding river-channel evolution. Global flood inundation models assume a 2-year return period for bankfull conditions, but this assumption remains untested globally. Here we use observations and machine learning to estimate bankfull discharge at ~1-km resolution along a recently developed global river network.

A Novel Method for Reservoir Outflow Simulation Based on Spearman Rank Correlation Between Satellite‐Derived Water Elevations and Model‐Simulated Reservoir Storage
1 Introduction Reservoir outflow is a crucial variable for understanding hydrological processes and water resources management in a basin (Busker et al., 2019; Chang et al., 2010; Chao et al., 2008; Wada et al., 2017).
