Renaissance Goo: Senses and Materials in Early Modern Apothecary Taxonomies and Soft Matter Science
Abstract This essay brings together research in the history of science and soft matter physics to consider how early modern Italian apothecaries organised and communicated their knowledge from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century through an “apothecary taxonomy.” This was based on a what we call a “hylocentric” classification scheme (from the Greek hyle = matter, material, stuff) founded on a tactile understanding of materials.

Review: ‘How to Be a Renaissance Woman’
"How to Be a Renaissance Woman" is not really a how-to book (but you guessed!). No, Jill Burke's sprightly cultural history, subtitled "The Untold History of Beauty & Female Creativity," is a window on the lot of women in early modern Europe.

The Best Art Books of 2023
Before we launch into the best art books of 2023 that you selected, tell me about your book Pinch Me. What prompted you to write this book, here and now? It was a painting that prompted me, a modest work by Picasso, a still life with a jug and apples, in Paris. I was so struck by it, experiencing a kind of full-body presence. And it was especially surprising because it’s a very unassuming painting. I wasn’t expecting it to have this effect on me.

How to Be a Renaissance Woman: The Untold History of Beauty and Female Creativity
Last month, the Taliban government in Afghanistan indulged in a particularly malicious act towards women, passing a law closing all beauty salons. Having run a truck through all other freedoms, it attacked the one remaining place where women could still find employment and meet and mingle outside the home. Did those heroic religious warriors really see such spaces as cauldrons of vanity?
Think Tinder’s shallow? Try Renaissance marriage portraits
Good catch: Portrait of Joan Thornbury (1566) by Hans Eworth Marriage doesn’t seem to have made Joan Thornbury very happy, judging by her 1566 portrait by Hans Eworth – a Flemish artist known for his paintings of gentry and nobility in Tudor England. This month, Thornbury will be reunited with her husband Richard Wakeman (Eworth’s portraits of the couple were originally intended to be hung together) in Painted Love: Renaissance Marriage Portraits at the Holburne Museum in Bath.
Bill would add second-degree murder charges for drug dealers in Alaska overdose deaths
Citing Alaska’s high mortality rates associated with drug overdoses, Alaska Gov. Under the legislation, prosecutors would be able to charge drug dealers and drug manufacturers connected to the death with second-degree murder, exposing criminal defendants to longer sentences and eliminating early release.
