1 INTRODUCTION Plant vegetative desiccation tolerance (VDT), observed in so-called resurrection plants, is a rare and phylogenetically scattered example of anhydrobiosis, or life without water (Gaff and Oliver 2013). Many plants produce desiccation tolerant (DT) reproductive structures, but leaves, stems and roots must mitigate a wider array of stresses under extreme water deficit than the relatively simple structures of pollen, spores and seeds (Farrant et al. 2020).
