Journalism is what I do. I tell stories, I encourage writers, I help visual journalists, I aid designers. I am a guide for development of long-term projects, and a champion of exposing the underbelly of our community. I'm an idea person who believes in the future of newspapers.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I worked for the weekly newspaper at my community college as a writer, page designer and editor.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

It's easier to share information and it is helping more people realize the value of local journalism.

First place award for our circulation category for coverage of a record flood in April 2013.

I was editor for a set of deadline stories on a record flood that earned our newsroom second place in the breaking news story category.

2013 - Community Service

Our first enterprise story after I joined the Kokomo Tribune, this story explored access to trauma care both in the region and throughout the state. In subsequent stories, we explored how the state was addressing the issue of too few trauma care centers and access for rural populations.

First place award for a series exposing poverty in Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Chronicles: Water and Drought. This series of stories followed several area farmers as they dealt with a year of restricted water deliveries during a declared drought.

This first place finish was for two stories about a movement to merge the county's two school districts. It was believed such a move would reduce administrative costs.
