By Jim DeLillo STAYING WITH IT The nosewheel hit first. That's not supposed to happen. I put it down on the nose wheel. Not recommended. Dangerous, actually. The kind of thing that can flip you over or spin you around like a top. I never practiced for this circus act. My first time on a unicycle, except this seat was a Cessna airplane. A Cessna 172. My first time in that airplane. All of my training was in its baby brother, the 152. This seat was higher. My view changed. That matters when landing.

It was a dark and stormy night. No, really, it was. Not the polite kind of rain that taps at the windows and lets you think. This was the kind that flattened everything. Streetlights smeared. Headlights bloomed into white wounds in the dark. The kind of night where the road doesn't just disappear, it feels like it turns against you. The glare of lights gave way to the sound. Glass, metal, something tearing. It all arrived at once, as if the night had been waiting for it. I was on a first date.

What the Storm Left Behind

AFTER THE STORM We thought it was something we could bring back It appeared after the storm like something returned, not lost. From the second-story window, across the lagoon, we could see it sitting low in the shallows, blue and white faded into the gray light. Not wrecked exactly. Just... waiting. We watched it the way you watch something that might become yours if you don't rush it. A few days passed. Then a week. Then another. No one came. No trailer backed down the road.
