Entitlement demanded vs. grace received
I have a friend who has fallen on hard times. She and her husband came to the U.S. over 30 years ago and eventually became naturalized citizens. They raised two children who were born in the U.S., both of whom are productive citizens. Sadly, the couple had difficulties in their marriage which ended in divorce. Her husband has returned to their home country to work there. She now relies upon the help of her children (who are living in another state) to cover expenses.
Celebrity Service
If you were growing up in the 1960s and 70s, you may not have known that many of the entertainers and sports figures who were famous during that time had served in the military.
Pride Month Goes Out with a Whimper
As a follower of Jesus, I believe in treating every human being with civility and grace. And to be quite specific, I believe in loving my LGBTQ+ neighbor as myself. At the same time, because I care for the greater good of society and believe that God’s ways are best, I oppose many of the goals of LGBTQ+ activism. That’s why I was glad to see a much-diminished version of Pride Month in 2024. The pushback, which I have been expecting for years, continues to grow.
One Man's Journey Out of Homosexuality to Peace with a Loving God Came through Surrender
By Aliya Kuykendall Published on June 6, 2024 The first time Ken Williams became aware of feeling sexual desire, it was for another male. As a scrawny, unathletic child with a desire for heart-to-heart connection, he never fit in with the other boys. They mocked him for not being masculine enough, telling him he was gay. Williams didn’t like himself.
The Brew: More Trans Violence Foiled, More on God's Miraculous Protection of His People
Happy Friday! Today’s Brew is pouring out God’s protection over Israel, and others’ protection of progressive narratives. Trans Teen Arrested After Police Uncover Plot to Shoot Up Elementary School Thank God they were able to stop this one. And credit @rondeaulivia of Breitbart News for getting this one on the radar.
30 Years Later: What Can We Learn from Rwanda?
As Rwanda pauses to mourn the genocide that began 30 years ago this week, we might consider whether the identity politics of our day is paving the way for a similar time of tragedy on our shores. There has been talk of another hot civil war here in the U.S. in anticipation of a strong reaction to whatever our election results bring later this year. There are deep divisions within our population, much of which have been fueled by identity politics.
Days of Observance Among People Made in the Image of God, by Jim Kenaston
By Jim Kenaston, The Stream, April 9, 2024 Jim Kenaston graduated from Messiah College with a B.A. in History (1983) and from Miami University with an M.En. in International Environmental Affairs (1990). In his writing, Jim hopes to offer encouragement to fellow Christians, or a constructive word of challenge to non-Christians, as he seeks to follow Christ with integrity through these times.
Days of Observance Among People Made in the Image of God
By Jim Kenaston Published on April 9, 2024 Despite all the uproar over the White House’s official proclamation of “Transgender Day of Visibility” being observed on Easter Sunday this year, it turns out it’s just one of 47 commemoration days or weeks that the LGBTQ+ community has sprinkled throughout the year — not including the entire month of June, which has been proclaimed “Pride Month.” Until last week, I was unaware that in 2009 an activist had declared March 31 to be “Transgender Day of...
Happy Counter-Cultural Valentine's Day — Here's Some Old-School Relationship Advice for Single Women - The Stream
With Valentine’s Day here, I’d like to relay some “old school” reflections I shared with a friend who asked for such input for her young-adult daughters. My advice will seem counter-cultural, given our current place in the shadow of the sexual revolution, but in light of the relationship carnage we see around us, and with a broadly biblical understanding of male and female differences in mind, this is what I told her.
The Blind: The Film About Miss Kay and Phil Before Duck Dynasty Fame Releases to Theaters September 28
The first time Miss Kay Robertson and her family of Duck Dynasty fame watched the new film The Blind, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. “When … Willie [Robertson] got up to talk about it, he couldn’t even talk. … It’s got those emotions.” Miss Kay spoke with The Stream’s Nancy Flory about the film that tells the story of her life with Phil before he came to Christ. It is a raw take about his weaknesses with alcohol and his rough lifestyle before he came to know the Lord.
‘The Royal Scam’ revisited
Steely Dan's 1976 song The Royal Scam (from the album of the same name) reflects on the plight of Puerto Rican immigrants to New York City during the 1950s and 60s, people who hoped to get a piece of the American dream for themselves, only to have their hopes dashed by the hateful discrimination they experienced soon after their arrival.
Pro-Gay Theology, the Film 1946, and the Multiverse
By Alan Shlemon Published on August 9, 2023 Multiverse movies are all the rage these days. Spiderman, Avengers, The Flash…everyone wants to go back in time, correct a mistake in the past, and then live in a new “corrected” timeline that is free of the perceived defect. If We Could Go Back in Time What if the pro-gay theology advocates of the film 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture were able to harness that same power?
The Human Side of LGBTQ Pride and the Predicament It Causes for Loving Christians
For almost 20 years now, I have been guided by this principle when it comes to LGBTQ people and issues: reach out to the people with compassion; resist the agenda with courage. But how, exactly, is this done? And how does it play out in terms of the people we are called to reach and the agenda we are called to resist? There are Christians who avoid the culture wars because they are too toxic, fearing that any involvement will only turn LGBTQ-identified people away from the faith.
Redeemed For a Purpose
By Jim Kenaston Published on May 9, 2023 I first met Arthur and his family in the mid-1970s during my teenage years. Art was serving as an elder at the church our family began attending when we moved to the same area where Art and his family had settled some years before. I will never forget his story. It begins in the late 1920s. An Early Demise, From a Broken Heart He was no more than an month old when his mother, Sonja, reached the end of her rope.
How ‘Progressive’ Christians Misuse the Bible
By Michael Brown Published on April 26, 2023 Help Us Get to Know You We want to better serve you. And we need you to tell us how. Please take our specially-crafted survey to help us better understand your concerns, fears, interests and impressions — of The Stream and the world. It is one thing to reject the authority of the Bible entirely, claiming that it is not the inspired Word of God.
Escaping the Grip of the Sexual Revolution
All of us either grew up during the Sexual Revolution or have been living under its ever-expanding shadow. Whether through our own choices informed by its hedonistic ideology or through others’ selfish acts, its consequences have been devastating. Any honest assessment would lead one to conclude that it was all based on a string of lies.
Ironies of Our Time
The scientific method is a useful tool that modern man has learned to exploit to our collective advantage. Scientism, however, is the view that the material world is all that exists, and that use of the scientific method is the only true way of knowing anything. Like any worldview, Scientism is based on a set of presuppositions one takes on faith, yet if you speak with people entrenched in this view, they may not recognize that the conclusions they come to are ultimately faith-based opinions.
In hospitals, they are still obsesssed with masks
My primary role of late has been to assist my elderly mother through any number of medical appointments. In shuffling from one to the next, we sometimes have to remind each other to bring a mask. We're aware that the masks offer no protection against COVID, but for the sake of others, we've complied with the mandates that are still enforced upon entrance to medical facilities.
