Dear Editor Ella Hubbard poses a helpful question ‘Can a focus on reducing the UK’s prison population benefit public health?’ The answer is a resounding ‘yes’. Our prison population has nearly doubled in the last three decades and has been near record levels for a number of years. A capacity crisis is also a public health crisis. Prisons are inherently unhealthy places.

I once thought this statement was unproblematic but it is clear that language around health inequalities becomes problematic in many ways; two of which are its politicisation and in terms of complex definitions.

Councils need support to save local lives

Earlier this month the Government published its new suicide prevention strategy, pledging to reduce the number of suicides in England within two-and-a-half years. Sadly, suicide rates have been rising for the last four years and are currently the highest they have been for a decade. So it is vital we have a national plan with common priorities national and local organisations can focus on, with a target the Government can be held accountable for.
