Outsourcing and the cost to community and family
Prior to the beginning of the 2025/2026 school year, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board voted to terminate seventy (70) district custodians represented by the Education Support Staff Association (ESSA). Many of these custodians had been employees of the school district for years. These school district custodians were not terminated for lack of work.
Vote for a positive change
To the editor: Recently, I had the opportunity to meet Morgan Dulian, a candidate for the Fairbanks North Star Borough Board of Education. It didn’t take me long to realize this mother of three young children is someone very special and different from many other candidates who file for public office.
How to Keep FOMO and FOPO from FUBARing Your Results
That’s a whole lot of acronyms. Let’s break it down. Do you ever feel yourself being sucked into the vortex of another person’s energy, knowing the whole time that this probably isn’t the best decision? Do you hear the virtuous little voice on your shoulder telling you it would be far more beneficial to go to bed?
A Brief Guide to Move From Scarcity to Abundance
Nearly all of us have an innate desire to be better, but moving from wanting to be to actually being can feel nearly impossible. Do you believe it’s possible to have it all? I’m serous. Stop for a moment. And ask yourself if you really believe you have the ability to live at a level where you body works, your business and income produce at the level you want and need them to, your connected to the source and feel purpose-driven, and your relationships allow you to give and receive joy.
Kings Eat First: A New Way to Win Today
In my last article, we talked about moving into a state of flourishing and living a life of abundance. It introduced the idea of The Big 3 — finding success in our work, relationships, and energy. Energy, however, continues to be the greatest of these Big 3, and it’s also where so many of sell ourselves short. To intentionally create energy takes some intentional selfishness. It means carving out some time each day to connect with the Source, to commit to your goals, and to pursue your best self.

GoLocalProv | Business | Upgrading from a SIMPLE IRA to a 401(k) Plan? It’s Not that Simple
Monday, August 23, 2021 Jim Sampson, Business Contributor Many small businesses use a SIMPLE IRA (Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees) because it’s, well, simple. But as companies grow, they may look at the benefits of a 401(k) plan and decide to switch. While the SIMPLE plan is aptly named in many respects, there are quite a few deadlines and potential pitfalls to be aware of when it comes to making this shift, and now is the time of year to be paying attention.

Monday, March 15, 2021 Jim Sampson, Business Contributor View Larger + Let’s start by repeating the ground rules for 401(k)s. When looking at ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974), which governs 401(k) plans, it clearly states that 401(k) fees shall be REASONABLE for the products and services delivered. Nowhere in ERISA does it say that a plan must have the lowest fees.

GoLocalProv | Business | Does Your 401(k) Plan Have PB&J, Or Is It Just Dry Toast?
Wednesday, December 16, 2020 Jim Sampson, Business Contributor View Larger + In some situations, employees’ wages would be reduced by the plan’s default contribution percentage, sometimes as low as 2% or 3%. A potential issue is that the default deferral rates could cause employees to contribute less than they would if they actively signed up for a plan on their own. That’s because many employees who are auto-enrolled leave their savings rate at the low initial percentage.

Unemployment benefits should sustain families and communities during economic hardship. They currently don’t.
Any Alaskan who has been laid off or experienced the loss of a job would likely tell you it is one of the most stressful, disruptive times of their lives. To weather periods of unemployment, Alaska workers rely on the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program. Unfortunately, UI benefits have been stagnant for a decade and don't provide adequate wage replacement to help workers stay on their feet while they search for new employment.
