Jim Workman is in his 24th year as a journalist, serving currently at The State Journal - West Virginia's business newspaper, published weekly by West Virginia Media Holdings.
Among his top beats at The State Journal are: business, the Department of Agriculture, West Virginia Lottery, WV Film Office, resorts, food and sports & recreation, including the New Orleans Saints training camp in WV.
He began primarily in sports for the Charleston Gazette and The Register‐ Herald until 2009. From 2010-2013 Jim served as the Assistant Managing Editor for the Register‐Herald, where he contributed editorials and managed a newsroom staff. He also oversaw daily coverage of The Greenbrier Classic and the National Boy Scouts Jamboree.
At the Register-Herald, won two W.Va. Press Association awards in 2013, first and second place in the "Best Editorial Page" category in the largest newspaper division.
He has served as the Vice President of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association and has also served as its interim President.
Jim has been a columnist covering West Virginia high school football and the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for statewide‐ distributed Wally’s & Wimpy’s Football Digest for 15 years.
Prior to his print experience, Jim served as a radio sports talk show host in the Kanawha Valley on WCHS‐AM and WQBE‐AM.
He was the founder and editor of West Virginia Sports on the Net (WVSPN) from 1998 to 2004. He appeared as an occasional on‐site host with RSN Sports webcasts 2011-2013.
After a stint in California from 2004 to 2005 where he served as a sports editor for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, Jim returned home and worked as Sports Information Director/Athletic Marketing Director for the University of Charleston from 2005 to 2008.
