What was your first job as a journalist?
Freelance researcher at CQ Roll Call.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! We have a type writer at work and I use it for short letters to people. I am not a hipster.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
In my limited experience, that varies. But, in short, it means asking the questions you think need to be asked and reporting the answers...
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Word, Excel, InDesign, Photoshop, an Olympus VN-7200, a reporter's notebook, a Bic Round Stic pen, and Google Documents. Oh, and Evernote.
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because politics was way too depressing.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, but I wrote for my college newspaper and I mostly wrote op-eds.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Not that I am any bit qualified to offer such advice: don't hesitate to send an email asking for comment.
When's the best time to pitch you?
When I am awake.
