In a study that preceded the discovery of the CF gene, Welsh and a colleague proved that chloride flow is impaired in CF airways. Following the discovery of the CF gene in 1989, Welsh and his team demonstrated definitively that CFTR is a chloride channel, or pore, at the airway surface that allows chloride ions to flow out of airway cells.
