Main text Dignity is an important concept in ethics and human rights advocacy. Not surprisingly, dignity has been employed prominently in recent AI regulation, institutional declarations, and policy instruments on machine learning. As a current example, the term dignity appears six times in the AI Act of the EU (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689), a comprehensive legal framework on AI that presents dignity both as a value and a right, but without being explicitly defined.

1 INTRODUCTION Philosophy of aging is a diverse and complex field of research. In its beginnings, the debate was focused almost exclusively on whether or not this process is a disease and the benefits and harms of its conceptualization. This discussion is still open today, and we find increasingly sophisticated arguments in the literature. However, in recent years, the focus has broadened to other types of discussions that go beyond the pathologization of aging in itself.
