Let’s face it. Traveling on cruises internationally these days can be a challenge. Cancelled flights, lost baggage, cramped airline seats, missed connections….we’ve been there, done that. That is why our recent experience onboard the Viking Octantis Great Lakes cruise was such an extreme pleasure. We boarded our flight here in San Diego for a smooth, on-time landing in Milwaukee.

Those of you who read my travel product tips regularly know I am in constant search for the best carry on luggage options for both national and international travel. Years ago, I wrote an article about traveling through Europe for a month-long trip through different climates—CARRY ON ONLY. It was somewhat novel for its time, but today, since lost and delayed baggage on connecting flights becoming a common occurrence, it makes sense more than ever to go the carry-on route.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

You are the voice of the truth. Never compromise, no matter what you perceive as reasons to do so.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I started learning Adobe PhotoShop in 1990, when it first appeared on the scene. It took years to perfect, but now it is my best friend.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Funny you should ask....I was Editor-in-Chief of "The Broadcaster" for several years at my high school in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

Joanne and Tony DiBona both won respective awards for their article and photography on Quebec, Canada, which appeared in the San Diego Union Tribune travel section and was syndicated across the world with the Tribune News Service.

2021 - First Place, USATODAY10Best contributions in the national and international categories

I am pleased to announce, together with my husband and fellow photojournalist Tony DiBona, that we won first place honors for our USATODAY 10Best contributions (in both the national and international categories) in the 2021 San Diego Press Club Excellence in Journalism award competition. The judges lauded our work in producing "original descriptive photo galleries of US and International destinations and lifestyle." This competition drew more than 1,100 entries, making it one of the largest journalism competitions in the nation. Judges for the Press Club’s entries included members of 15 journalism professional organizations from around the nation, including press clubs in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Rochester, Florida, Cleveland, Orange County, Milwaukee, Tulsa and Alaska.
