COLUMBIA, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Our attempts to figure out what was happening with the S.C. Attorney General’s Office’s prosecution division started in February 2025. We filed our first Freedom of Information Act request, asking for prosecution records. Our investigation started after cases we were tracking stemming from a series of news investigations we conducted between 2021 and 2025 (Lost Trust and Final Disrespects, and Objection).

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Trent Pendarvis stood handcuffed in the middle of his farm, asking to call his attorney multiple times as lawmen surrounded him, preparing to seize and destroy his hemp crop. Pendarvis, a lifelong Dorchester County farmer, spent the morning with 10 other farmhands working a peanut field. He was wearing a tattered, holey work shirt when he ran inside a Harleyville hardware store for farm supplies and wrestled his ringing cellphone from his shorts pocket.
