Why October is a big month for Germany and Siemens - and why it is not only about the leaders to be remembered
Joe Kaeser Joe Kaeser Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender Siemens Energy & Daimler Truck Published Oct 3, 2022 Today, October 3, it is Day of German Unity. It commemorates German reunification in 1990 when West Germany and East Germany were unified, so that for the first time since 1945 there existed a single German state. To my mind, this was the greatest and most significant moment in German post-war history.
The energy transition in the post-war world
Energy policy today is all at once domestic, foreign, climate and security policy. And this will be even more evident in a post-war world. There is a historic opportunity for the global energy transition if we can reconcile the security of supply with decarbonization, more renewables and sector coupling technologies. I believe four aspects are important to drive our energy transition in a post-war world – and all have to do with innovation.
What can companies do to de-escalate the US-China trade war?
The trade dispute between the US and China threatens to sever the ties that hold the global economy together. The US and China have not decoupled yet, but that could happen if leaders on both sides do not correct their course. Multinational companies must cooperate and compete to prevent decoupling. At the outset of 2020, the world’s two largest economies are not getting along. In July 2018, the current US administration imposed tariffs on $34 billion of goods imported from China.

The Century of Upheaval
(Yicai Global) March 5 -- Is this the beginning of the Asian Century? There are many indications that it is. There is no doubt that the balance of power is shifting. The United States is still the world's largest economy. Yet, while it was once the strongest proponent of free trade, "America first," with a tendency toward "America only," now applies at the center of power. That is reflected by the tonality with which the U.S. asserts its interests.
CHINA'S President Xi Jinping first announced the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013. After five years, it is now evident that the BRI is not just a series of one-time infrastructure projects or another outbound investment program, but a long-term strategic initiative that aims to open the world to China and to open China to the world.

Five key challenges of our times
The world we live in seems to have become more complicated. Technology is making great leaps. Our economies are being rapidly transformed. In politics, principles and understandings that have been rock-solid for decades can no longer be taken for granted. And societies that have never done better than now are starting to question "the system" and cast doubts on the future. In some areas, it’s not only that we’re not making any progress; we’re actually going backwards. So we're in for rapid change.

Perspective: Why robots will improve manufacturing jobs
There is a widely held view about what is coming in manufacturing. It goes something like: Move over, humans. We don’t need you anymore. Robots will take it from here. But it isn’t true. This is not manufacturing’s future. People have feared the march of the machine for centuries. Yet for just as long, machines have changed work; they have not replaced it. And the emerging fourth industrial revolution — even with its digital, automated assembly lines — is not an exception to this trend.

Old patterns must be broken | IOL
Since Germany assumed the G20 presidency, a number of initiatives have been launched, including a “Compact” with individual African nations and the visionary proposals of the so-called “Marshall Plan with Africa.” These initiatives are big steps in the right direction. Why? Because they call for a respectful partnership. Simply asking these questions breaks a pattern that has solidified over decades, if not centuries. I think this pattern deserves to be broken.
To Beat Climate Change, Digitalize the Electrical World
Kaeser is the CEO of Siemens On April 12, 1870, a message from England clicked through on a telegraph machine almost seven thousand miles away in India—the first dispatch sent via a monumental telegraph line that Siemens helped to build from London, through Tehran, and all the way to Calcutta. This moment was among the first to mark a new, unprecedented era of intercontinental communication, trade, and cultural exchange that would come to be known as globalization.

A NUMBER of major companies — from PepsiCo to Walmart to U.P.S. — have recognized that corporations have a responsibility to address the causes of climate change before it is too late. We do not have to wait for an international treaty or new regulations to act.
