The director of the Popel Shaw Center for Race & Ethnicity at Dickinson College sought information on the McAllister Cemetery near Fort Hunter Park in 2023. That's where Richard McAllister , a notorious 1850s Dauphin County U.S. commissioner and 1840 graduate of the Carlisle college, is buried.

Dauphin County Civil War monument once faced problems in Harrisburg | Column

Near the northern edge of Harrisburg, between a scenic lake and a crumbling former high school, a monument points skyward. The 110-foot-tall obelisk bears an inscription. “To the soldiers of Dauphin County who gave their lives for the life of the union,” it reads, “in the war for the suppression of the rebellion, 1861-1865, erected by their fellow-citizens, 1869.” Actually, 1869 is when construction of the monument stopped.
