Joe Zee Remembers Virgil Abloh
The first time I met Virgil Abloh was at a show for the whirlwind known as Kanye West, so I won’t even call that a real meeting because it was quick and it was really a passing in the night. But the second time I met Virgil—this was pre-Vuitton, during his Off-White days—it was a great meeting. It was in Paris, and I remember seeing him for the first time.
See Fashion Icon Joe Zee's Favorite Things
My Favorite Things AIR MAIL Editor at Large Joe Zee—the charismatic fashion stylist, journalist, and producer—has piloted brands such as W, Elle, and Yahoo Style on ascendant journeys, thanks, in large part, to his exceptional eye. So it was only natural for AIR MAIL to call on Zee to share his top picks of the moment. Herewith, “some things that definitely helped me through a pandemic year,” he says of his selection, “but all things I will also use and love post-pandemic!”

Joe Zee & Tyra Banks on FABLife’s Emotional IVF Episode
September 20, 2015 My new syndicated daytime talk show, FABLife, premiered last week and one of the first lessons I learned is that as well as you may think you know someone, you don’t always have the full story. Let me explain what I mean: I love sitting next to these amazing, talented, beautifully accomplished women every single day at our opening table.
5 Things You Didn’t Know About the House of Chanel
Joe Zee, producer of the Netflix ‘7 Days Out,’ reveals some of what the cameras didn’t catch. December 26 2018 3:48 PM EST For the last two-and-a-half years, I’ve been involved with the Netflix project, 7 Days Out. As a longtime editor, I think I’m always fascinated by the idea of good storytelling, but this series helped me bring fashion to life in a totally different way.

Urban Outfitters Ordered to Remove Outrageous Thigh Gap Picture on Their UK Website
THE BEFORE PICTURE: The original image that ran on the Urban Outfitters UK website selling the polka dot mesh briefs. Photo: UrbanOutfitters.com Meghan Trainor approves of it. Beyoncé has been accused of retouching it. But now, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), a regulation organization that oversees media in the United Kingdom, is banning it. The touchy thigh gap strikes controversy (and conversation) once again.
#StyleHack: A Simple Fix So You Can Eat More This Thanksgiving
I have never been shy about loving to eat, which I understand can be an oxymoron for a fashion person. But when it comes to the holiday season, I turn eating into a true participant sport. When your mother’s feast resembles a cruise ship buffet, you’ll not only feel obligated, but you’ll want to try everything in front of you. So while you’re tapping out your calorie count into gastronomic numbers, you’ll be relieved to know that there’s a clothing lifesaver within reach, when THAT moment comes.
Jessica Alba and Tory Burch Are BFFs in Business and Life
When Jessica Alba launched the Honest Company in 2011, she called Tory Burch for help. “I was constantly leaning on her for advice about how to structure the business, what does it mean to have business partners and investors, and how does it all work,” the entrepreneur tells Yahoo Style.
#TBT: When I Styled Beyonce
I styled Beyonce for the first time ever back in 2002 when I was the Fashion Director at W magazine. I remember being obsessed with Destiny’s Child at the time but there was something so magnetic about the lead singer, Beyonce. I pitched her to my Editor-in-Chief, informing him that she was going to be a huge star and we should give her her first cover— just her. This was months before it would be announced that she was going to star in Austin Powers “Goldmember” even. He trusted me and we did it.
The Next Big Thing In Denim Is Straight Outta L.A.
Warren Baker and Robbie Rogers of the denim brand Hampton + Baker In case you weren’t convinced, here’s more proof that LA is becoming a fashion hub: brand-new denim brand Hampton + Baker. We know what you’re thinking; LA’s always been the land of jeans, but Hampton + Baker does things a little differently. First, this collection is only jean jackets — five to be exact.
All Hail Prince, the Forever King of Fashion
Legendary artist Prince was found dead at his recording studio in Minnesota on Thursday, according to TMZ. He was 57. While I’ve never met him, and I don’t want to pretend I did, he’s had such an indelible and lasting impact on the fashion industry. He created pop culture — and what would style be without the former? My first encounter with Prince happened back in 1983, when I was in the tenth grade, pulling an all-nighter writing a paper on the economic state of Brazil.

How Working With David Bowie Changed My Career and Life
I worked with David Bowie only once, but I’ll never forget it. The opportunity came from his wife, supermodel Iman, whom I have known and worked with many times throughout my long career in styling.

What It’s Like to Shoot a Fashion Story in Cuba
This story is part of a weeklong Yahoo series marking one year since the opening of relations between the United States and Cuba. In 1999, Elian Gonzalez was in Miami and I was on my way to Cuba. I was the newly minted fashion director at W, and we were collaborating with the American art photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia, one of the most influential photographers working today. He’s known for work that bridges documentary and theater, reality and fantasy, and W was all about artists like that.
This is the #1 Secret to Finding the Perfect Bra
Ask any woman: The hardest thing to shop for is a bra. Every brand, every store, every super nice sales lady will tell you something different until you want to throw your hands up in the air and say, “Forget it! I’m going braless forever.” But don’t do that. There’s one way to guarantee you’re getting the right size: Wear a bra while you measure your size.

Everything You Need to Know About Fall Boots
If there’s one thing you need for fall, it’s a pair of boots. But which ones? Thigh-high? Ankle booties? Mid-calf? Stacked heel? Flat? Stiletto? Suede? Patent leather? Yahoo Style Expands to Include Decor
For me, decor is not just about your house or the things in it—it’s the same way I believe that style is not just about the clothes you wear. Decor and style are a true reflection of your personality and, with that in mind, it is a natural extension for us to add the important category of decor to Yahoo Style.

Julia Roberts On Givenchy: “It Was Beyond My Wildest Dreams of Beauty”
New York Fashion Week is in full swing, and one of the most anticipated events was this evening’s Givenchy show. It marked the first time that the brand has shown in New York and what a show it was. Nicki Minaj, Kim and Kanye, Ciara, and many more celebs were on hand, but the person in the front row with the biggest, loveliest smile was none other than Julia Roberts.

Man Bun Hairstyle Trend Is Taking Over
The man bun is a hair-raising trend that’s got Tinseltown tied up in knots, literally. “You can see it in Hollywood now,” Joe Zee, editor-in-chief of Yahoo Style, told ABC News. “Actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Chris Hemsworth and even David Beckham has been rocking it.” The up-do style is no longer just for girls. Guys are loving them, too. “I think a lot of women and girlfriends are like, ‘You know what?
Modern Medicine Can Now Give You a “Designer Vagina”
Barshop was fairly insistent that I think about VSPOT as an anti-aging procedure rather than a medical treatment. “We try to explain it the same way as people are working out their bodies or eating healthy. It’s not just a treatment for someone who’s 45 years old,” Barshop says. “Start when you’re 30 so it stays tighter and younger.” She then explained that I’d understand once I tried the procedure. Um, what? There aren’t any published studies that conclusively prove any of these benefits, though.
THAT'S WHAT FASHION IS
Behind-the-scenes look at the fashion industry from high-profile editor/stylist/TV personality Zee. The author’s first fashion gig came when he was 6 years old and told a friend to lose the knee socks that made her look like a baby, charging her 30 cents for the advice. The fashion-obsessed Canadian first dipped into journalism at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where he and photographer Carter Smith created a fashion-centric campus tabloid.

James Corden Cracks Up the Audience at the Burberry Show By Marching Down the Runway
On Thursday night in L.A., stars including Cara Delevingne (and her new girlfriend Annie Clark aka St. Vincent), Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Mila Kunis, and the entire Beckham brood attended Burberry’s “London to L.A.” spectacular atop the Griffith Observatory. As guests filed in, we caught up with James Corden to find out who he was most excited to see. “I’m looking forward to seeing my wife, who is stuck in traffic right now,” Corden told Yahoo Style.
Why I Absolutely Have to Have the Apple Watch Right Now
On Friday morning at 3am, my husband silenced his alarm, logged on to his computer and ordered two Apple watches. A few hours later, I opened my eyes and wired him $350 (plus tax), because one of those watches will be for me. Why am I buying an Apple Watch? Because I’m curious. And why, exactly, is curiosity worth nearly $400? I should first acknowledge that I am not a typical customer. I have more reasons than most to bother buying Apple’s latest gadget.
Why I Wear the Exact Same Thing to Work Every Day
About three years ago, I had one of those typical Monday mornings that many women have experienced. With a fairly important meeting on the horizon, I started to try on different outfits, lacking any real direction or plan. As an art director at one of the leading creative advertising agencies in New York, I’m given complete freedom over what I wear to the office, but that still left me questioning each piece that I added or subtracted from my outfit. “Is this too formal? Is that too out there?
How One of Luxury's Biggest Companies Is Radically (& Quietly) Changing the Way You Shop
When you’re spending big on a luxury item, what are the things that convince you to put down your credit card? That a product is expertly crafted? Yes. That it’s beautiful? Sure. That it’s made in a responsible way, with minimal impact on our environment? Maybe…. The majority of shoppers still put aesthetics first when when it comes to luxury goods, but that hasn’t stopped one of the industry’s top leaders from making sustainability a major part of his agenda.
Why Internet Culture Has Spawned a Bunch of Cry Babies
What a month for stirrers of controversy! In the past 30 days, the designers of Dolce & Gabbana have made an enemy out of Elton John for going against gay parenting, Lena Dunham angered a whole slew of people after The New Yorker published her humor essay, “Dog or Jewish Boyfriend? A Quiz,” and Empire star Terrence Howard caused an outrage after suggesting that the “n-word” be used on the hit Fox show for the sake of keeping things realistic.
SXSW: Joe Zee & Eva Chen Talk #BambooCeiling, Social Media & What It's Like to Work in Fashion Now
Lucky magazine's editor in chief Eva Chen sometimes gets complimented for her amazing wedding dresses, a case of mistaken identity for designer Vera Wang. Yahoo Style's own Joe Zee has been stopped on the street by those calling him Jason Wu, saying how much they love the dresses of his the First Lady's worn.
Reese Witherspoon #TellUsMore
This morning Reese Witherspoon put out a call on social media for reporters on the Oscar red carpet to #askhermore. So we took her up on it as she arrived at the awards show. Instead of asking about her pre-ceremony beauty regime or if she was “nervous,” Yahoo Style posed this to Witherspoon: What does it mean for you to be a film producer and help create strong roles for women in Hollywood?
Joe Zee's Tips On How to be a Designer
Photography by Hao Zeng for Yahoo Style Styling by Christopher KimHair and Makeup by Mary GuthrieModel: Bibi at Muse NYC This time last year I added another slash to my resume. Joe Zee & Bob Mackie Talk Costume Design & Cher’s Iconic Style
In this episode of Fashion Bites, Editor-in-Chief Joe Zee sits down with costume designer Bob Mackie—the genius behind some of Hollywood’s most legendary dresses. Mackie's decked out women like Barbra Streisand, Cher, and Liza Minelli in feathers, sequins, and enough sparkle to bring Tinkerbell to life. Today, he says, red carpets are too boring. More on that, plus what it’s like to lend clothes to Beyoncé and why he still doesn’t consider himself a fashion designer in this episode.
Joan Didion in Celine's Spring 2015 Campaign, Coolest Thing Ever
No brand's as close to a fashion girl’s heart as Celine. Since Phoebe Philo took over in 2009, the British designer's made her minimal, slouchy, aesthetic a uniform for millions of women, along with her favorite Adidas Stan Smith sneakers. Now, she has taken things to the next level, by featuring none other than iconic author Joan Didion in the brand's Spring 2015 campaign.
Meet Calvin Klein Model & Internet Sensation Myla Dalbesio
Photography by Jody Rogac Styling by Shibon Kennedy Hair by Siobhan Benson Make-up by Grace Ahn Model Myla Dalbesio is a pro at pretending she’s larger than she is. A size 8 to 10, she’s never belonged with show-your-bones high-fashion models or big-and-beautiful plus-size ones. She’s an “in-betweener,” an awkward fashion industry term meant to make it clear that she’s bigger than sample size (0 to 2) but smaller than plus size (14 and up).
Michelle Obama DIY'ed her Work Dress into a Party Dress for Under $20
Instagram: @talbotsofficial On Friday night, the First Lady stood by her man as they hosted, from the White House, a Travel Bloggers Summit to highlight the Study Abroad and Global Citizenship program. And while we love the message of the night, we are even more in love with Mrs. Obama’s quick festive styling of her custom Talbots dress.
Does John Galliano Deserve a Second Chance?
Galliano has been absent from the runway since 2011 when he was ousted from Dior, so minus that quick stint with Oscar de la Renta, this will be his official reintroduction to the fashion world. To give you some context here, Maison Martin Margiela is a design label owned by Renzo Rosso, another fashion rebel, who owns and runs a multi-million dollar company that has acquired and relaunched labels like Diesel and DSquared.
Exclusive: Givenchy's New Muse Julia Roberts on Becoming a Supermodel at 47
Julia Roberts stars in the new Givenchy campaign. Photography by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott I have known Julia Roberts for more than ten years and I have my fair share of Givenchy clothes hanging in my closet. So when Riccardo Tisci, the design genius behind the brand, cast my friend Julia as his latest muse for the spring campaign, two of my favorite people finally came together.
Tracee Ellis RossTracee Ellis Ross
I hung out with Nick Axelrod at Yahoo! Style, and we did something I try very hard not to do: I Yahoo!’d myself! Some of what came up was expected, but some was hilarious and it was all in good fun! Thanks to my pal Joe Zee, Yahoo! Style Editor in Chief, for making this happen!
Confirmed! Kathy Griffin Will Replace Joan Rivers on 'Fashion Police'
Despite the fact that she has admitted to being on "every worst dressed list imaginable," Kathy Griffin is apparently qualified enough to judge others' outfits. E! announced on Monday that Griffin will become a member of Fashion Police. On the show, which is set to return January 12, the comedian will replace the genius Joan Rivers. “I get it! These are some big shoes I'm going to fill. Joan was truly one of a kind. Now I hope you will accept me for me. I'm just Kathy. Did I say I'm just Kathy?
Gene Simmons's Designer Daughter Talks Body Shaming, Feminism, and Refusing to be Airbrushed
Photography Atisha Paulson “I have an idea,” Sophie Tweed-Simmons says when we meet for coffee on the Upper East Side in New York. “How about if I ask strangers on the street if they’d dance with me? I’ve always wanted to do that.” The Sophie x TheStyleClub designer is brainstorming on our way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the photo shoot we're about to do.
In Defense of Kim Kardashian and the Editors of Paper Magazine and Why This Cover Makes Sense
I sit down with Mickey Boardman, the editorial director of Paper magazine, who was on the cover shoot, and he explains whose idea this was, how this cover came to be, if the photos were retouched, and who oiled that famous butt. Plus, he hints at more pictures to come! So I have been a magazine editor for more than 25 years with a majority of that time spent discussing, booking, styling, and conceiving cover shoots.
MAC’s Newest Collaborator Prabal Gurung Says Women Should Choose Glamour Over Grunge
Joe Zee sat down for an exclusive interview with the designer— a favorite of Lady Gaga and the First Lady— to talk about his makeup collaboration launching this month, red carpet dos and why disheveled hair and barely there makeup is not a good look. JZ: So you’re launching your brand new makeup collection. I just picked it up and it’s really heavy and solid, and very gold. Oh my god — solid gold. I can’t believe I even said that. I mean, I can. PG: I can believe you said that. JZ: I love it.
