As I continue my “Bible in a Year” journey with Fr. Mike Schmitz now into 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles, my heart settled on (1 Chronicles 22:16) “Arise and be doing! The Lord be with you!” It landed differently because earlier that same day I had been reading a discussion about “agency,” the human capacity to act, to choose, to shape our lives rather than simply drift through them.

King David sinned when he went off mission

In recent weeks, several members of Congress have resigned because of alleged sexual sins. Reading the headlines reminded me again of a story radio host Dennis Prager once told. More than once after dinner, with the family still at the table, his father would leaf through the newspaper and quip, “I know the first question I am going ask God when I get to heaven. Lord, why did you make man’s sexual appetite so strong?” The question lands because it touches something ancient and painfully familiar.

David’s kindness to Mephibosheth

My father’s brother was simple. He had a serious speech impediment and lived with my grandmother until she passed away. Afterward, my father brought Uncle Charles to live with him. One day, while my parents were at work, two men came to the house. Uncle Charles answered the door. They told him they were from the gas company and that he needed to step outside while they inspected for a leak. While he waited outdoors, the men ransacked the house and stole whatever valuables they could carry.
