Wat troostte Abrahams hart toen hij een inwoner was in het land der belofte, als in een vreemd land, en in tabernakelen woonde met Izak en Jakob, mede-erfgenamen van dezelfde belofte, dan deze hoop?
Meditatie: Hopen tegen hoop
Zo heeft de huichelaar een hoop, maar het is een hoop die vergaat (Job 8:13-14). Zijn vertrouwen is als een spinnenweb, dat snel neergeveld zal zijn. Wat is de verwachting van de huichelaar, als hij gierig zal geweest zijn, wanneer God zijn ziel zal uittrekken? (Job 27:8).
Meditatie: Geen droom
Wees toch overtuigd van de waarheid van het christendom. Want voorzeker, het moet geen droom, geen ongegronde inbeelding zijn die de gelovige doet verlaten hetgeen hij voor zijn deel kiest, en waarin hij zijn vermaak stelt, en die hen liever schande, oneer, armoede, vervolging, de dood en het vuur doet ondergaan dan dat zij zouden doen wat hen zou afsnijden van de hoop waarop zij wachten.
Meditatie: Wedergeboren
Gebruik deze hoop, die uw leven, is tot uw beste voordeel. Oefen uw geloof en verblijd u in de hoop der heerlijkheid Gods. Zo zult u Hem verheerlijken, Die u geroepen heeft tot de hoop van Zijn Koninkrijk, wetende dat u zalig geworden bent in hope (Romeinen 8:24) en dat er een hoop voor u weggelegd is in de hemelen (Kolossenzen 1:5). Leef als de zodanigen die wedergeboren zijn tot een levende hoop (1 Petrus 1:3).
Meditatie: Geduldige hoop
Denk niet dat dit leven altijd duren zal. U mag nu en dan meer dan gewone lekkernijen en enige feestdagen van gevoel hebben, maar weet dat uw leven hier door geloof en hoop is en niet door gevoel. Indien het God belieft u uit Zijn overvloeiende goedheid, tot Zijn eigen eer, als op Zijn knieën te troetelen en meer dan gewoonlijk te onthalen, schat het hoog, word er niet trots door en denk niet dat dit uw schoon onthaal zal zijn zolang u hier leeft.
Meditatie: Van kruis naar kroon
Zo krijgt de Heere gelegenheid om de heerlijkheid van Zijn kracht, waarheid en getrouwheid te vertonen, door hen eindelijk in het bezit van de beloofde erfenis te stellen, na weinig jaren geduldig wachten. En dit niettegenstaande de menigte zwarigheden die in de weg lagen, de menigte zwakheden van hun eigen hart, de menigvuldige ontmoedigingen van binnen en van buiten waarmee zij te strijden hadden. God zal echter afrekening houden met alle goddelozen.
Meditatie: Langverwachte kroon
Nu zuchten de gelovigen, verlangende met hun huis dat uit de hemel is overkleed te worden, terwijl zij in deze tabernakel zijn (2 Korinthe 5:1, 2, 4). Nu blijft geloof, hoop en liefde (1 Korinthe 13:13), opdat zij mochten gekweekt en bekwaam gemaakt worden voor de heerlijkheid, om deel te hebben aan de erve der heiligen in het licht (Kolossenzen 1:12). De heerlijkheid is geen laag leven, en de zondaars zullen daar geen adem halen.
Meditatie: Geloof en hoop
De gelovigen wachten hier op de heerlijkheid, en leven in de hoop en in de verwachting van hetgeen komt. Nu blijven het geloof en de hoop (1 Korinthe 13:13). De Heere vindt het goed dat het zo zal zijn, om wijze en gewichtige redenen. Wij zullen er enige weinige aantonen die ons daarin kunnen bevestigen, opdat Hij de eer van Zijn waarheid, getrouwheid en waarachtigheid mocht ontvangen. Degenen die geen dwazen zijn, kunnen toch enkel op Gods Woord betrouwen.
Meditatie: In hope zalig

Is er zo’n heerlijke erfenis voor u daarboven, en zijn uw harten en genegenheden hier beneden? O, hoe onbetamelijk is dat! Hebt u hoop en verwachting op een kroon en gaan uw genegenheden uit naar een strovis? Behartig hetgeen geschreven staat (Filippenzen. 3:20): „Laat uw wandel in de hemel zijn.” Leef als burgers der heerlijkheid, alsof u al uw kapitaal en handel daar hebt. Begeer en verlang daar te zijn met christelijke onderwerping.

Meditatie: Als de arenden
De heerlijkheid, na dit leven, zal de gelovige bevrijden van al die droevige, kwellende verduisteringen en onderscheppingen van de stralen van Gods liefde. Wolken komen nu nog tussen Gods aangezicht en de arme ziel, en er ontstaan velerlei ontstemmingen. Vrees, schrik en verlating kwellen de gelovige, en werpen hem in een koorts en veranderingen. Ze beoorlogen hem, zodat hij aan God denkt en aan de dagen vanouds, en hij wordt ontsteld.
Meditatie: Heerlijke volheid
De heerlijkheid na dit leven zal ons bevrijden van al die kwellende bekommeringen waaraan wij hier onderworpen zijn, zoals honger, dorst, koude, vermoeidheid en dergelijke. De arbeider zal niet meer zweten. De lastdrager zal niet meer roepen: „Och, mijn rug!” De arme mens zal niet meer sloven om brood voor zijn huisgezin. Hij zal niet meer zee en land afreizen om de kost te winnen, om een bete brood te verkrijgen en een kleed om zich mee te dekken.
Meditatie: De dood verslonden
De heerlijkheid na dit leven zal de gelovigen bevrijden van alle oorzaken van droefheid. Geen onderdrukker of vervolger zal daar leven, geen droevig schouwspel zal daar gezien worden. Geen brandende zon zal daar zijn. De zon zal op hen niet vallen, noch enige hitte (Openbaring 7:16, Jesaja 49:10). De heerlijkheid zal de gelovigen bevrijden van alle zonde, die al de moeilijkheid veroorzaakt die wij hier ontmoeten. De zonde komt niet binnen de grenspalen van het nieuwe land der heerlijkheid.
Meditatie: Ziel en lichaam
Het is een heerlijkheid die de ziel en het lichaam raakt. Zelfs onze lichamen zullen opgewekt worden in heerlijkheid (1 Korinthe 15:43) en Jezus Christus zal onze verderfelijke lichamen veranderen, opdat zij Zijn heerlijk lichaam gelijk zijn. Laten we dan zien waarvan deze heerlijkheid een gelovige bevrijdt. De heerlijkheid zal dan een gelovige ziel ten volle vrij maken van alle benauwdheid, droefheid, zuchten, pijnen, kwellingen, smarten, ziekten en dood. Daar is geen dood in de heerlijkheid.
Meditatie: Eeuwig gewicht der heerlijkheid
De eeuwige heerlijkheid wordt in de Bijbel ook een eeuwige erfenis genoemd (Hebreeën 9:15). Laten we aangaande deze heerlijkheid verder zien welke namen die krijgt in de Schrift. Zij wordt genoemd een kroon der heerlijkheid (1 Petrus 5:4) en een kroon der heerlijkheid die niet verwelkt. Dit is iets anders dan een kroon van gele klei. Zij is een eeuwige heerlijkheid (2 Timotheüs 2:10, 1 Petrus 5:10). Zij is een heerlijkheid die niet verwelkt.
Meditatie: Als koningen heersen
Aan Gods kinderen wordt beloofd te heersen, dat is daadwerkelijk hun Koninkrijk te bezitten en te genieten van de heerlijkheid van hun grootheid. Koningen hier op aarde kunnen koningen in naam zijn en niet meer dan dat. Maar de bezitters van deze heerlijkheid zijn daadwerkelijk in het bezit van hun Koninkrijk der heerlijkheid. Zij heersen. En niet alleen dat, maar zij heersen met Christus (2 Timotheüs 2:12) en dat voor eeuwig (Openbaring 22:5).
Meditatie: Heerlijke toekomst
Graag willen we nu over die heerlijkheid preken. Er is een heerlijkheid aanstaande, waarvan sommigen deelgenoten zullen zijn. Daar is een hoop van deze heerlijkheid, die men ook hier hebben kan. De zekerste grond en het onfeilbaarste teken van deze hoop is Christus in de ziel, Die woont en werkt in haar. Hierin is een kort begrip van al de rijkdommen der heerlijkheid van de verborgenheid van het Evangelie: Christus in ons, de Hoop der heerlijkheid.
