The yucca and the moth
Discover how Virginia’s native yucca relies on a single moth for pollination, while its seeds feed the moth’s young in a remarkable mutualistic bond. We hear a lot these days of native plants and their pollinators. With the loss of habitats and the declining of species, many of us put plants in our yard to try and help out this situation. We see flowers and generally think that a lot of different insects will be visiting them. I certainly see that on my milkweeds when they bloom.

The Surry Scarp - The Tidewater News
The Surry Scarp Published 10:32 am Saturday, July 29, 2023 By John Bunch Virginia Master Naturalist HSS The Suffolk Scarp is fairly well known in our area, but are you aware that there’s a Surry Scarp as well? To define a scarp, it is a steep slope or abrupt declivity. We generally think of that in our area as being sculpted by water, such as how you see the land/surface water interaction at the cliffs of Chippokes today.

Skippers and butterflies and moths! Oh my! - The Charlotte Gazette
By John Bunch Virginia Master Naturalists When we see butterflies and moths, we generally recognize which of the two we are looking at. They are separated from each other by their differing body structures, their habits, and the way the veins are set up in their wings. Butterflies fly during the day and most moths fly at night, although there are some that fly during the daytime, such as the Clearwings.

A migrant mammal in our area - The Tidewater News
By John Bunch Virginia Master Naturalists I live in the Sedley area, and while walking across the driveway on the late afternoon of April 29, a bat flew out in front of me from our weeping cherry tree. It landed nearby in the grass and was unable to get back up in flight. I knew that my dog would get at it if I didn’t leash him. After hooking him up I returned to the bat. From its large size and reddish-colored body, I was pretty sure that it was a red bat.
Pink Lady’s Slippers - The Tidewater News
By John Bunch Master Naturalist It’s rare to talk with an adult in our area who doesn’t have a fond memory of the Pink Lady’s Slipper orchids that grow here. Such a beauty in the spring. With all the logging and development these days, you just don’t see them as often as you used to. But when you do see one, it stops you in your tracks. These orchids have a dependence on a certain soil fungus and cannot live without it.

Beyond the Holacracy Hype
Idea in Brief The Hype Holacracy and other forms of self-organization have been getting a lot of press. Proponents hail them as “flat” environments that foster flexibility, engagement, productivity, and efficiency. Critics say they’re naive, unrealistic experiments. The Reality Neither view is quite right. Although the new forms can help organizations become more adaptable and nimble, most companies shouldn’t adopt their principles wholesale. The Potential A piecemeal approach usually makes sense.
