Poem Of The Week: Facing The Music By Mairéad Byrne
arts Facing the Music It's not frost; it's snow It's not backfire; it's gun-fire It's not fun; it's alcoholism It's not a tantrum; it's violence It's not witty; it's abuse It's not marriage; it's divorce It's not anger; it's rage It's not nothing; it's a lump It's not fear; it's reality It's not sleep; it's death It's not au revoir; it's the end Perhaps the misinterpretation or studied re-appropriation of words and expressions, is allowed a greater degree of latitude in a language as prone to...
Venus At Midnight: The Amygdala Safari By Carmella de Keyser
arts Carmella de Keyser is at her most persuasive when in freefall: plummeting through the ‘cyan blue’ with Icarean abandon and crossing borders of the senses as though synaesthetic apprehension were a most natural condition of understanding, the poet promulgates a new aesthetic, subordinating all formal considerations to the moment of pure invigoration.
Review: Peas On Your Knees - A Life In The Poems Of Michael Rosen
arts To read Michael Rosen’s poems out loud is to hear an echo. For to give voice to a random selection of his most performable verses is to be accompanied by Rosen himself, declaiming at one’s shoulder, but with infinitely greater skill and idiosyncratic grace. We are drowned out in his estimable company, or we would be were we to be sharing a real platform, and not a settee in the living room of our heads.
Poem Of The Week: From Cheshire By Kit Wright
arts From Cheshire For Anna Come home safe: I think of you driving Over the Runcorn Bridge in our senile car, Its toothless ratchets, arthritic pistons conniving To take me away from wherever you are. Its steering like that old prostitute working a living on Huskisson Street outside our door: Its raggedy brake shoes thin as the wind, giving Nothing but ice to your foot on the floor.
Poem Of The Week: Among The Talk And The Laughter By Norman MacCaig (1910-1996)
arts Among the Talk and the Laughter Why does he fall silent? Why does that terrible, sad look tell he has gone away? He has died too often. And something has been said that makes him aware of the bodies floating face downwards in his mind. Norman MacCaig's haunted poem occupies a space between conversation and abstraction: temporarily losing sight of his surroundings, the narrator's gaze is drawn to the poem's subject, whose mien suggests an existential vacancy occasioned by terrible experience.
Poem Of The Week: Thirlmere By Rhiannon Hooson
arts Thirlmere After we lit the last candle the gales couldn't hold us any more. Along the lanes the walls had begun to slump, water sluicing through them green as grass, but we drove through anyway and out into the valley. The fields were polished flat. Trees were hung with drooping ropes of fleece that caught the breeze like kudzu.
Midtarsal joint stiffness alters the metabolic cost of simulated running via mechanisms other than changes in foot energy storage and return

Malcolm Turnbull re-writes history .
_Christopher Pyne debunked Malcolmss fantasy of Scott Morrison playing a double role in the leadership challenge. _ Another case, not previously reported, was his hijacking the credit for the same-sex superannuation entitlements policy in 2007/08 from Liberal MP, Warren Entsch, who led the campaign for reform in the Coalition.
Small can still be beautiful
Opinion Think in terms of need instead of want, says John Challis The world doesn’t feel like it’s unfolding as it should right now. Inflation is painful; the invasion of the Ukraine is unjustified and cruel; climate change has cost tens of billions of dollars; the pandemic refuses to go away. The word “unprecedented” gets thrown around a lot when events today are described. It pays to look back a few decades, though. In fact, in 1973, the world looked startlingly familiar.
Voter anger makes for voter turnout
Opinion Growth has been hot topic, says John Challis There’s a lot of talk about voter apathy as the municipal election approaches. Four years ago, Ontario’s average voter turnout was 41.8 per cent. Predictions are that it will be even lower this year. The ennui has transferred to the politicians themselves. In Ontario, 548 municipal offices will be filled by acclamation, 139 mayors among them. Except in Tay Township, where the entire council has been acclaimed, Simcoe County has bucked the trend.
Foot arch rigidity in walking: In vivo evidence for the contribution of metatarsophalangeal joint dorsiflexion
Loading metrics Open Access Peer-reviewed Research Article Abstract Human foot rigidity is thought to provide a more effective lever with which to push against the ground. Tension of the plantar aponeurosis (PA) with increased metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint dorsiflexion (i.e., the windlass mechanism) has been credited with providing some of this rigidity. However, there is growing debate on whether MTP joint dorsiflexion indeed increases arch rigidity.
Ontario’s best farmland is disappearing under concrete
Opinion Hypnotized by dollars, government has aligned itself with those who benefit from economic growth, says John Challis Every day in Ontario, we lose 175 acres of farmland to urban development, according to the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, and, with arable land making up just five per cent of the total landmass, there is no room for further losses. The OFA is campaigning to try to preserve what is left of the province’s farm industry.
Measuring the quality of life
Opinion Canadians feeling swamped, says John Challis Robert F. Kennedy gave a speech in 1968 that has echoed for half a century. It was a notion he’d been playing with for some time, and it became part of his campaign to become the Democratic presidential nominee. He suggested that gross national product was the wrong measure of a nation’s success. It measured nothing but money and output, and failed to measure the level of satisfaction citizens were experiencing.
A lesson from recent history: If Big Tobacco can be brought to heel, so can rampant sprawl
Opinion Grassroots organizations can bring about change, says John Challis Orillia Today Tuesday, March 1, 2022 Ontario is facing a tidal wave of development. Political forces at the provincial level are insisting that all municipalities prepare to enlarge their urban boundaries to make way for more building and more population. There is little public appetite for this expansion. But the development storm seems overwhelming.
