It's been six years since the Wuhan virus named COVID-19 killed millions of people worldwide. Decisions are driven by vanity
The ballroom with the greatest underground bunker in the world; the Triumphal Arch that will be taller than any other in the world; the Trump Kennedy Center, saved from decades of deterioration by You Know Who; and the kidnapping of Maduro, all brought to you by the one and only. There is really no difference between his building a ballroom that dwarfs the White House and his current war in Iran. It's all about him. It's always been all about him. kAms@6D 96 42C6 23@FE 56>@4C24J :?
All About Eyes: Getting ready for back to school; early vision screenings for children
The wonders of the world are often first encountered through the eyes of a child. Yet without good vision, a child’s ability to learn about the world becomes more difficult. Vision problems affect one in 10 preschoolers and one in five school age children. Children often don’t realize they have vision problems, yet until age 12, vision is 80% responsible for the learning process. Since many vision problems begin at an early age, it is very important that children receive proper eye care. kAmp 4@>>@?

It's time to fight for eroding rights
When the Supreme Court made abortion legal across the country, or made gay marriage legal, and maybe even when it made school segregation illegal so many years ago, a lot of Americans felt their country was lost in the wilderness. What do you do when you see your country losing its moral grounding?

Gabapentinoids confer survival benefit in human glioblastoma - Nature Communications
Abstract Neuronal-glioma interactions are increasingly recognized as critical in the development and progression of central nervous system tumors. Recent research highlights that gliomas can integrate into neural circuits through various mechanisms, including the synaptogenic factor thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1). This new mechanistic understanding of cancer neuroscience allows for novel insights into target discovery.

However, with this innovation comes a critical need for security. School-based support for children bereaved due to parental intimate partner homicide
ABSTRACT Internationally, there is growing recognition of the scale and consequences of intimate partner homicides (IPH). A significant, though often neglected consequence is how many children are impacted by these tragic events. In such challenging circumstances, children need stability, continuity and trusted people they can rely on for support.
Pirates’ numbers paint sad picture
Oct 26, 2024 By John Frederick For the Mirror I am a reformed baseball fan and statistifile. My affliction began with the Pirates’ near miss in 1966 and continued unabated beyond the Pittsburgh’s’ 1979 World Championship. Half a century later, my mind remains cluttered with Pirate batting and earned run averages, trades gone awry and ones that helped win championships.

Guilfoyle’s 1973-74 team stood tall
By John Frederick For the Mirror The number of Blair County boys basketball teams that have made it to the PIAA Final Four in the last 50 years can be counted on one hand. Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic’s 1974 third-place finish in the state tournament was one of that small handful of teams and celebrates the 50th anniversary of their playoff run this spring. Some exciting basketball was played in these parts in the late 1960s and early ’70s.
What's New for Tax Year 2023 (When Filing in 2024)
Not surprisingly, tax planning and compliance activities continue to increase in complexity, with no end in sight. Not only are we nearing the end of tax reporting under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, we have experienced a plethora of new tax legislation in the last couple of years, most notably two versions of the Secure Act and the new Corporate Transparency Act, among others, which you can read about on our publications page.
2023 Year-End Tax Planning Guide
135 Planning Tips and Tax Strategies to Consider for 2023 and 2024 2023 has quietly been a banner year for the economy. Inflation has cooled from its 2022 highs, the economy has added 2.6 million jobs through November 2023, and stocks are near all-time highs. However, many prognosticators feel that this unabated growth will inevitably slow in 2024, with a recession (or a “soft landing”) possibly looming on the horizon.
A stable place in a time of turmoil
Schools can be the only stable and predictable environment in the lives of children affected by the tragedy of fatal domestic violence – but they need resourcing “I had some lovely teachers. And I think school actually was a place where I could forget about everything else.” Following the tragedy of domestic homicide, with mothers the predominant victims, the children left behind face complex losses.

All About Eyes: Summertime eye injuries Original
During this fun-filled season, it’s easy to forget the possibility of injury. Eye injuries in particular are more common in the summertime. Ninety percent of serious eye injuries are preventable through the use of appropriate protective eyewear. Here’s a few of the potential problems to be aware of. A common injury in the summertime is a scratch on the surface of the eye (or corneal abrasion) from a foreign body, such as a tiny stone, grain of sand or other object.

Year-Beginning Tax Planning - Quick-Strike Tax Moves to Consider in Early 2023
While everyone thinks (or worries) about taxes when they are due, many participate in some form of year-end tax planning. Few, however participate in what we like to call “year-beginning tax planning.” We believe a more prudent approach is to create and execute a tax plan early in the year and pay attention to planning opportunities throughout the year with a final review during year-end tax planning season.
Check One Off the New Year's Resolution List
While many New Year's resolutions aren't fulfilled, here's one that you should resolve to get done - get your eyes examined, especially if you can't remember when your last exam was? Which begs the next question, how often do you need an eye exam? This is a common question asked by patients. The answer depends on the patient's age, risk factors for eye disease, and the presence of any ocular symptoms. Individuals presenting with ocular symptoms require immediate eye examinations.

Midyear Tax Planning Opportunities: Quick-Strike Items to Consider This Summer
With 2022 over halfway through and while there is still sufficient time to act and implement new strategies, now may be an ideal time to focus on tax planning for the remainder of the year. Although many of the most direct impacts of the COVID-19 crisis have faded into the rearview mirror, many lingering effects along with several international events have led to supply chain issues and an inflationary environment in 2022.
Earth Matters: Recalling Hurricane Agnes in Blair
By John Frederick For those of us old enough to remember, 1972’s Hurricane Agnes is the literal and figurative barometer by which all extreme flood events are measured. Like all hurricanes, this one formed when conditions enabled an atmospheric wave to begin circulating along the Intertropical Convergence (ITC) Zone. This might sound like complicated science, but like many scientific processes, the development of such storms is understandable if one can grasp a few basic principles.

Equal justice should be our goal
With all due respect to Board of Contributors member Rick Blatchford, he’ll do well read from Matthew 7 and Luke 6 on the need to focus on larger, not smaller transgressions. At length, on Dec. 29, he blasts some miscreants who allegedly “obstructed streets and sidewalks,” and others who (according to the not-so-reliable Breitbart News) “chased two men down the street, shouting obscenities.” Does Mr. Blatchford know that convicted, pardoned fraudster Steve Bannon once helmed Breitbart?
Praying Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade
Frederick County Right to Life, in alliance with 40 Days for Life and the Pro-Life Action League, conducted a peaceful vigil and presence outside Planned Parenthood in Frederick on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, praying that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe vs. Wade. Volunteers from the parishes of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, St. John's, St. Ignatius, Holy Family, St. Peter's, and St. James from Charles Town West Virginia, participated from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. each day.
Frederick needs wider citizen involvement
Here is a challenge for the mayoral and aldermanic hopefuls — Reform the NACs! The NAC (Neighborhood Advisory Councils) began many years ago to improve the connection between government and citizens. Under the NAC system, the whole city is divided into a dozen or so areas, each with its own NAC. The NACs generally operate with monthly meetings with city staff present to explain proposals and answer questions.
Councilman's resignation is the only solution
The confrontational and illegal behavior of Councilman Kai Hagen toward a Frederick County deputy sheriff who was exercising his lawful duties on June 20 was clearly unbecoming of an elected member of county government. Mr. Hagen made an effort to intimidate the deputy.
No one can win this war
The culture war cannot be won by either side. The most concerted attempt by this country to win the culture war was Reconstruction after the Civil War. The political power was in the hands of the Republicans, which at the time really was the party of Lincoln, and they managed to pass those crucial amendments to the Constitution and to send the U.S. Army into the south to enforce the rights and safety of Black people — obviously it didn't work.
Why the Electoral College is so important
Why does the Electoral College still exist, despite its contentious origins and awkward fit with modern politics? The old-school electoral system has its benefits. The Founding Fathers created the Electoral College after much debate and compromise, but it has provided stability to the process of picking presidents. The system empowers states, especially smaller ones, because it incentivizes presidential candidates to appeal to places that may be far away from population centers.
Going to hybrid plan wrong for county schools
Why is the Frederick County Board of Education moving ahead with hybrid classes with teachers set to arrive on Jan. 27 and students on Feb. 16? The Board of Education assumes that they will only be able to handle 30 percent of the students in person. This means that approximately only 13,000 out of the 44,000 public school students will be able to be in class a couple of times a week. The Board of Education also acknowledges that the start of school may be delayed further to Feb.
Unfair handling of allegations against alderman
It has been more than a week since Alderman Ben MacShane's astonishing accusation against Alderman Roger Wilson. What is surprising is that the following week brought public pledges of future investigation and suggestions that new policy and legislation are needed. But facts? Reasons why a day after Christmas Facebook post was MacShane's only outlet for such serious allegations?
Election audit wouldn't get outcome some seek
Frederick News-Post contributor Rick Blatchford called for a national audit of our presidential elections in his Nov. 25 column, "Time for comprehensive nationwide election audit." That's not a bad idea. But he stated that "Leftists say that 'it’s a dangerous idea' to question the legitimacy of elections." On the contrary, it was President Trump on Election Night who dangerously declared himself the winner before half the votes were even counted. The president did not call for an audit.
Will President Trump be brought to justice?
Remember when Republicans were calling for Hillary Clinton's head on a platter because four CIA contractors were killed in Benghazi? Republican-led House committees investigated the events as thoroughly as they possibly could and even carelessly admitted that these committee hearings were called just to bring Clinton's poll numbers down. Four Americans died. More than 200,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 so far and tens of thousands more undoubtedly will die in the months to come.

Caricature’s realism
‘The Steam-Roller and the Elephant, ‘Indian Opinion’, 11 January, 1908. Ritu Gairola Khanduri’s book Caricaturing Culture in India: Cartoons and History in the Modern World (2014) is a pioneering study of the rich and complex history and artistic concerns of the newspaper cartoon in India. Consistent among its multiple objectives – part history, part ethnography and part personal journey – is an attempt to map an alternative historiography of the nation by archiving cartoons.

On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. In response, the Nepal government suspended international flights from 22 March, and border crossings from India and China from 23 March. On Tuesday, 24 March, Nepal initiated a nationwide lockdown, bringing the country to a halt. With Nepal already seeing its first case of local transmission, the lockdown is likely to continue for a while.
