New Research Tracks the Declining Use of Milwaukee’s Municipal Court
Over the past 20 years, the number of cases processed by Milwaukee’s Municipal Court fell dramatically. In the late 2000s, the court’s annual caseload fluctuated between 130,000 and 160,000, but during the past three years, the annual number of cases has remained well below 40,000. Cases fell by 72% for adults and 94% for children between 2006 and 2025.
New Milwaukee data shows steep drop in policing quality-of-life offenses
In 2006, Milwaukee Police wrote 91 tickets for spitting in public. It may have been a minor offense with few obvious victims. But the enforcement of a little-known city ordinance was emblematic of a crime prevention strategy that changed policing in America and Milwaukee. At least for a while. It was known as "broken windows." The idea was that aggressive enforcement of quality-of-life offenses would create and maintain a sense of order and stability in neighborhoods.
How Democrats Swept Wisconsin Up and Down the Ballot
Yesterday, Democrats ran the table in Wisconsin. They won every statewide race–Governor (+8), Attorney General (+9), Secretary of State (+5), and Treasurer (+4). They flipped both competitive Congressional seats. Rebecca Cooke took down incumbent Derrick Van Orden by a 7-point margin. Mitchell Berman defeated Bryan Steil by 4 points. I was especially interested in the state legislative races where, for the first time in 16 years, control of both chambers was truly up for grabs.
Best Places to Retire in the US
A new ranking of the best places to retire in the US gives its top honor to a city not in the sunny climes of Florida but in Michigan. Midland is No. 1 in the US News & World Report ranking, which assesses factors including housing affordability, access to health care, traffic and walkability, state taxes, and resident happiness. One big reason the city of about 43,000 people scores well is that it offers a relatively low cost of living compared to cities of similar sizes.

Meteorites: Nature’s free sample return
Long before spacecraft visited the Moon, landed on asteroids, or returned samples from distant worlds, scientists were already studying material from beyond Earth. These extraterrestrial rocks, meteorites have often been described as the “poor man’s space probe” because they provide direct physical evidence from space without the expense and technological complexity of launching a spacecraft. Missions such as Apollo, Hayabusa2, and OSIRIS-REx have transformed our understanding of the Solar System.

A look at the net worth of the average American
The stock market and rising home values appear to have done good things for the bank accounts of middle-aged and older Americans. The average 50-something now has a net worth of $1.55 million, and the figure rises to $1.96 million for 60-somethings, reports USA Today , citing new stats from the federal Survey of Consumer Finances. Those falling short of the marks shouldn't despair: The "average" figure is skewed by the uber-wealthy.
A Closer Look at the Campus Vote in Wisconsin
OnOne of the clearest contributors to Trump’s 2024 presidential victory was his newfound support among young voters. Estimates vary, but all agree that, when considered by age, his support grew the most with voters under 30. According to Pew, Trump’s support grew by 4 percentage points among these voters; Catalist put his improvement at 6 points.
Man Dies After Entering Tiger Enclosure at UK Zoo
A visitor to a popular British wildlife park inexplicably entered a tiger enclosure on Saturday and was mauled to death, police say. One witness tells the BBC that she saw the unidentified man at Yorkshire Wildlife Park pacing near the tiger enclosure with headphones on before climbing over barriers and down into the enclosure. "He jumped in and crawled in front of the tiger," she says. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the park near the city of Doncaster has temporarily closed.
Most Popular Halloween Candy, Ranked
Reese's rules the plastic pumpkin, at least according to DoorDash metrics. The food delivery company dug into 2025 Halloween orders and found that the peanut butter cups were America's top candy for the third straight year, with Hershey bars and M&M's close behind. Generally speaking, chocolate dominates, but sour is rising: Airheads and Sour Patch Kids muscled into the top 10, and Haribo gummies joined the list for the first time—then quickly blew past Nerds in recent months.

Wisconsin votes a lot. I mean that in two ways: voter turnout is often high and opportunities to vote arrive frequently. In 2024, the state’s voter turnout was the highest in the nation (76.66% of eligible voters). And statewide elections occur almost every year, often more than once. The total number of voters participating in these contests routinely varies by millions, with inescapable consequences for the parties.
Trump Expects New Iran Talks This Week
President Trump says talks with Iran aren't dead, even after he shot down Tehran's latest offer. In a Sunday phone interview with Axios, Trump said he expects US negotiators to hold new discussions this week, likely through indirect channels mediated by Qatar. "They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make," he said, adding that Iran "overplayed their hand." Tehran, for the record, suggested the same is true of the US.
Ukraine Launches Biggest Drone Attack Yet on Moscow
Ukrainian forces fired more than 1,000 drones at Russia overnight, including hundreds that were launched toward Moscow, Russian officials said Sunday. Moscow's mayor described the wave of drones as the "largest ever" drone attack on the Russian capital and said there had been damage to a Moscow oil refinery and a residential building, per the AP.

Wisconsin’s L2 Voter File Vastly Understates the Number of Young Registrants
G. Elliot Morris argues that the polls in Wisconsin underestimated David Crowley’s support in the 2026 Democratic primary because they included too many young voters (who mostly supported Francesca Hong) and too few older voters (who mostly supported Crowley). Using the L2 voter file, he estimates that just 2-3% of a typical partisan primary’s electorate is composed of voters under 30.
David Crowley Wins an Upset with a Familiar Coalition Behind Him
Talk about a come-from-behind victory. David Crowley’s roughly 3,200-vote, 0.4-point victory in the Wisconsin Democratic primary came after every public poll—and Crowley’s own internal survey—showed him trailing Francesca Hong by double digits in the weeks preceding the election. The late-July Marquette poll, for instance, showed Hong drawing the support of 38%, followed by 16% for Mandela Barnes and 7% for Crowley. Thirty-four percent remained undecided in that poll.

And How Many Early Voters Wasted Their Vote
In Wisconsin, anybody can vote early by mail or in-person at an early voting site for any reason, and many people do. This is referred to, interchangeably, as “early” or “absentee” voting. In the August 2026 primary, 25.8% of ballots were cast by mail and another 11.9% in-person at an early voting center. Thirty-eight percent of Wisconsin Democrats didn’t wait until election day to cast their ballot in the governor’s primary.
Syria Sentences Assad to Death
Bashar al-Assad has been handed a death sentence by a Syrian court that no longer answers to him. The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus convicted the former president in absentia of crimes against humanity and war crimes tied to the country's nearly 14-year conflict, including the killing of children, torture, and mass murder, reports AFP. Assad was toppled from power in 2024, ending his family's reign of five decades, and is now living in Russia.

US Unexpectedly Lost Jobs in July
The latest jobs report arrived Friday with surprisingly weak numbers: Main number: The Labor Department said employers shed 23,000 jobs in July, though a poll of economists had expected a gain of about 83,000, reports the Wall Street Journal. June got worse: The figure is down from June, which logged a downwardly revised loss of 20,000 jobs. In fact, the department cut a total of 103,000 jobs from the May and June payrolls, per the AP.

Rating the Battleground Districts in the Wisconsin Legislature
The 2026 general election will decide which party controls Wisconsin’s state government, with a trifecta for either party realistically in play. Now, with campaign finance reports from the first half of the year in hand, it seems a good time to quickly tour each battleground district. For each district, I provide a rating. Safe seats are ones where I’ll be truly surprised if the other party wins. In Lean seats, I see a clear favorite, but an upset wouldn’t be shocking.

How Much Does it Cost to Run for State Legislature?
Wisconsin candidates are required to submit their next campaign finance reports by Wednesday, July 15th. These will record all their fundraising and spending through June 30th. The gubernatorial candidates fundraising hauls will draw the most attention, but I’m also looking forward to seeing the numbers for Wisconsin’s state legislative candidates. In November, Wisconsin will elect all 99 state assembly and 17/33 state senate seats.
How Homebuying is Increasing Racial Diversity Across Milwaukee
It took Milwaukee more than a decade to turn the corner on the mortgage foreclosure crisis. Owner-occupancy didn’t begin increasing until the late 2010s. At that time, homebuyers were to a great degree disproportionately White relative to their overall share of the city’s population. In 2018, about 39% of the adult population was White, but they accounted for 57% of homebuyers.
Supreme Court Upholds Birthright Citizenship

It was the sixth consecutive World Cup game in which Messi has scored, and the goal came after Messi missed on a penalty kick earlier in the game.

Pentagon Begins Releasing UFO Files
The US government released its first tranche of UFO files to the public on Friday, and, alas, "there are no clear photos of little green men or flying saucers," reports Axios. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson predicted in advance the release would be "anticlimactic," and he might have been on the mark. Here is how the New York Times describes things: "The initial files are murky still images that show what could be anything. In one, a cluster of dots appear on the screen.

Judge Voids Mass Layoffs at Voice of America
A federal judge ruled Saturday that Kari Lake, President Trump's choice to lead the US Agency for Global Media, did not have legal authority to largely dismantle the Voice of America. Trump Hints at 'Friendly Takeover' of Cuba
President Trump on Friday floated the idea of a "friendly takeover" of Cuba and said the two nations were in negotiations, reports the Hill. "The Cuban government is talking with us," said the president. "They're in a big deal of trouble, as you know. They have no money, no anything right now. Maybe we'll have a friendly takeover of Cuba. We could very well end up having a friendly takeover of Cuba." Exactly how that might play out wasn't clear.

We released a new Marquette Law School Poll of Wisconsin voters today. It includes a lot of details about topics like the Wisconsin Supreme Court race (voters aren’t paying much attention yet), the gubernatorial primary (voters aren’t paying attention to that either), and data centers (voters really don’t like them). Here’s one result from the poll that stood out to me. It comes from a bog-standard polling question that we ask variations of in most surveys.
Wisconsin School Vaccination Rates: an interactive map
The Washington Post recently published an interactive article which shared kindergarten immunization data collected from public schools in 34 states. The data shows plunging vaccine rates across the country. I was shocked by how low some of the numbers were, and I wanted to understand how they compared to school numbers as a whole. It’s possible than some kindergartners haven’t yet received all of the vaccination they will receive.
