Published June 18, 2026 04:07AM Editor’s note: On Friday, June 5, Yosemite guidebook author Erik Sloan re-ignited a fierce debate by adding more than a dozen bolts to Snake Dike (5.7 R; 800ft), a 1965 classic route on Half Dome that’s known for its sparse protection. Since then, some of the new bolts have been removed. When I think about the retro-bolting of Snake Dike, I think about surfing. YouTube videos of big wave surfing now routinely get millions of hits.

Critical thinking not included

Decades ago, when buying a Christmas toy, I needed to look at the box carefully. If the box said “batteries not included,” I knew I would need to pick up some batteries so there would not be any tears on Christmas Day. These days, I often see new social media entries or opinion pieces that (should) contain labels saying, “Critical thinking not included.”  Many of us spout off the most outrageous things without examining whether those thoughts are based in truth.

I love a good ad debate. And I find the Nike Boston Marathon kerfuffle particularly interesting because it has divided people I consider smart brand thinkers. Some insist it's off-brand. Others say, no! It's totally on-brand. I'll show my cards now: I think the "off-brand" folks are wrong. But they do have a very strong case. In defense of their argument: •The very first "Just do it" ad wasn't a professional athlete, but an old man, running across the Golden Gate Bridge.
