The philosophy of love
The ancient Greeks had at least six different words to describe love. Adam Waggoner, a postdoctoral research associate in Purdue’s Department of Philosophy, explains the two kinds of love that the philosophers focused on. “(Eros) is a kind of passionate love often associated with sexual or romantic love. Both Plato and Aristotle thought of it as a kind of craving,” Waggoner says.
Fireside Reads | Conserving Nature In Greater Yellowstone: Controversy And Change In An Iconic Ecosystem
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) is a region rich in wildlife, national parks, and national forests, and it is an idea. The idea is that to manage a region with diverse and fragmented jurisdictions (federal, state, local governments, national forests, national parks, and private landholdings) in order to protect wildlife and natural features (grizzly bears, wolves, bison, elk, pronghorn, cuthroat trout), the region must be viewed as an entity, an interconnected whole.

At this dire moment in the history of America’s National Park System, we who love the parks can be consoled and encouraged by learning how we came to have them. Fireside Reads | The Other Public Lands: Preservation, Extraction, and Politics on the Fifty States’ Natural Resource Lands.
Steven Davis is a political scientist and public lands scholar who, in 2018, published In Defense of Public Lands: The Case Against Privatization and Transfer. The subtitle clearly states the case he makes in that book — privatization and transfer of federal lands to states, or sale to private parties, are not good ideas as he explained in considerable detail.
Telephone And Texting Compliance News: Regulatory Update - July 2025

Fireside Reads | The Arches Reader
I first visited Arches National Park in 2011 and how I wish I had read a book like this to prepare me for that visit. I was impressed, of course, by the incredible arches and the landscape, had read Ed Abbey’s Desert Solitaire back when it first came out, had seen photos of the astonishing Delicate Arch, but life had never provided an opportunity to explore the remarkable landscape of southeast Utah and I had read little about Arches other than Abbey.

Lessons from the Glacier Peak Wilderness
One warm summer morning in early August of 2005, a small group of grad students from Western Washington University and I gazed across a small lake at one of America’s most spectacular mountain views. The lake was indeed small, really a small tarn, its glass-like surface reflected a perfectly clear upside-down image of Glacier Peak, a gleaming white volcano of powerful symmetry. The mountain was framed in the foreground by spires of subalpine fir.

The looming danger of privatizing our public lands
We who live in states with much public land should be thinking about what might happen should the Trump administration succeed in cutting land management agencies like the Forest Service, National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management so much that they cannot manage the land in their care. Would they perhaps say the lands in the care of those agencies should be sold to the highest bidder or to their friends? Might they propose management and care of public lands be privatized?
In praise and support of public lands
A recent issue of the Taos News featured a story titled “Dawson Elk Valley Ranch conserved under Native stewardship," which reported the Dawson Valley Ranch outside Cimarron was being purchased as part of the Vermejo River Watershed Conservation Project. The purchase, as reported, involved 50,000 acres and resulted from cooperation between federal and state government and The Nature Conservancy, a fine example of public-private cooperation and partnership.

The climate crisis receives much coverage these days, mostly focused on extreme weather, sea level rise, and dislocation of people by climate-related stresses like drought and wildfire. In the late 1970s, wolf biologist Diane K. Boyd tracked a lone female wolf named Kishinena in country around the North Fork of the Flathead River in Montana. As Doug Chadwick writes in his foreward to this book, most people think wolves were first brought back to Yellostone National Park in the mid-1990s, but by that time Diane and her colleagues had been studying them on the North Fork country, in Glacier National Park and surroundings, for well over a decade.
