TRIAL FOR THE MURDERER OF WPC YVONNE FLETCHER
Who Am I? My name is John Murray, and I am a former Metropolitan Police officer. For forty years, I have been fighting for justice for my murdered friend and colleague, WPC Yvonne Fletcher. Yvonne was just 25 years old when, on the 17th of April 1984, she was shot in the back by a bullet fired from an automatic weapon by a gunman from the first-floor window of the Libyan Embassy in London. I was standing next to Yvonne when she was shot and cradled her as she died.
The Doctrine of Election
The Doctrine of Election is a 236 page compilation of transcribed sermons delivered by John Calvin and translated from French to English by Robert White. Robert White translated ten sermons by John Calvin that pertained to the doctrine of election. The purpose of the book is to give English readers access to some of Calvin’s oral explanations of the doctrine of election to everyday Christians both in Calvin’s times (16th century) and today’s modern times.

Eliza Kashinsky: Eugene has historically done the bare minimum when it comes to following state rules. … and so some of what I see is Eugene saying, You know, we tried with accessory dwelling units to do as little as we could get away with. Maybe we shouldn’t try that again, next time around, ’cause it didn’t really work the first time. Eliza Kashinsky has been active in trying to address Eugene’s housing crisis. She and other citizens took the City to the state’s Land Use Board of Appeals, and won.

Review of Central City
Indy Perro Dog’s Name Press (May 5, 2020) Softcover $15.95 (243pp) 978-1-952258-00-8 Clarion Rating: 5 out of 5 Though its circumstances are harsh, Central City is a thriller with surprising heart. In Indy Perro’s noir thriller Central City, the mounting death count of so-called “undesirables” overshadows gang violence as cops and criminals alike struggle to stay ahead of deep corruption. Central City Detective Vinnie Bayonne has a gift: the clues and state of a crime scene seem to speak to him.
Alex Larman reviews Fall of the House of Byron, by Emily Brand
‘Mad, bad and dangerous to know.” The clichés abound when it comes to the most notorious of all the Romantic poets, the infamous Lord Byron. Critical and public interest in his work has (unfairly) waned over the decades, and has instead been concentrated on his public persona, that of a swashbuckling and at times diabolic figure who lived a riotous life before perishing in the cause of Greek independence in 1824 at the age of 36.

Hope in a Time of Crisis
A friend of mine recently shared this wonderful quote from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: Frodo: “I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.” Gandalf: “So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” How should we respond to times of crisis?
Poor Charleston | JSTOR Daily
Much is known about the lives of white, slaveholding mothers in the antebellum South. But their poorer sisters’ stories are less well known. The historian John E. Murray recovers some of their perspectives in letters written to the nation’s first public orphanage—correspondence that reveals both tragedy and deep love. In the years before the Civil War, poor whites in the South usually lacked land and couldn’t afford slaves.
Cat-astrophic Parasite
Here's how the bug works: Humans ingest Toxoplasma gondii, a common relative of malaria, which, at first, only makes itself known through mild flu symptoms. These symptoms have been known to linger in individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those affected by AIDS, but in the majority of cases, the symptoms pass, the host feels better, and the bug is forgotten.
How the world is being remade by the sheer weight of its numbers
Demographic shift continues to have an impact on many aspects of human life. It is interesting to note how societies progress from a pre-modern period of high fertility and high mortality to a post-modern phase of low fertility and low mortality. In this process of change, fertility transition has become a universal phenomenon — every country may be placed on a continuum of progress in the transition.
Machine learning academics are flocking to tech giants and that might be a problem
The die is very much cast when it comes to the growth of machine learning. With the expansion of tech companies like Google, Amazon and Uber, artificial intelligence-based research and products is a growth industry that’s only just getting started. Research from the International Data Commissionforecaststhat spending on AI and ML will rise from $12 billion in 2017 to $57.6 billion by 2021.

Stephen Hawking: At home in outer space
A file photo of physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking. Photo: Reuters I was born exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo, and I would like to think that this coincidence has had a bearing on how my scientific life has turned out,” wrote Stephen Hawking in an essay called, “Why We Must Ask The Big Questions”, included in his final book, Brief Answers To The Big Questions, published recently.
Mount Etna: volcano is sliding towards the sea and now we know why
The southeast flank of Mount Etna in Sicily is sliding towards the sea at a rate of several centimetres a year. This might not sound like much, but the kind of stress that this movement creates inside volcanoes can cause devastating landslides. If, one day, Etna’s movement significantly increases then it could have serious consequences. With this in mind, scientists such as myself have been studying Etna to try to better understand what’s going on.

Evangelism Starts With God
One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in evangelism is telling people the good news without telling them the bad news. No wonder I’m met with blank stares or “That’s nice for you, but not for me.” When we don’t tell unbelievers about sin and wrath, they often think grace is irrelevant. They don’t see their need for a Savior. I know I’m not alone. Myself, I suspect I don’t like sharing the bad news because of fear of man.
OPINION: A framework for police reform on the Central Coast
Trust and the establishment of legitimacy are essential to building strong relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Distrust of the police can lead to a lack of community involvement, an unwillingness to assist law enforcement with investigations, and in some cases, a perception of the police not as partners in the community, but as an occupying force.
Reforming the revolving door between banks, regulators and legislators
In Ends and Means, published in 1938, Aldous Huxley observed: In the press, which is owned by rich men, the interests of the investing minority are always identified (doubtless in perfectly good faith) with those of the nation as a whole. Constantly repeated statements come to be accepted as truths. For decades Australians have been told, by media outlets which rely upon advertising revenue from banks, that a strong economy requires strong banks and minimal banking regulation.
The Banking Royal Commission and the risk that dare not speak its name
The Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry has uncovered explosive evidence of lending and reporting practices that are challenging to accurately describe. Words like "negligent", "slipshod", and "careless" all spring to mind. In some cases, "dishonest", "fraudulent", and "illegal" might be more appropriate. Or "duplicitous", "brazen", and "shameless". But we are not writing headlines here. The one word which applies generally is "risky".

Ironically, it is Dr. Sokolov, the scientist who is at the heart of the CIA’s ANCHISES, and Gabe has figured it out with the help of his hitchhiker, which he finally appears to be able to handle. The question Gabe now faces is who to trust, who not to trust, and how to accomplish his CIA mission by either using magic or relying on Josh to be on point. Dominic is beginning to show his true colors. Red, white, and blue patriotic or selfish?

Ciudad Juarez: The Sinaloa Cartel and Where We Are Now
The AP ran quite a story the other day, capped with the blockbuster headline “Sinaloa cartel wins Juarez turf war.” After 3 years of brutal assassinations, countless kidnappings and the shuttering of roughly 10,000 local businesses, the article claims the battle between the local Juarez cartel and the Sinaloans (who began to try to take over in 2007) has essentially been won.
During Christmas, The Last Jedi isn't the only place to find a savior
We are drawn to movies with strong heroes and heroines because they provide the savior we all long for. Well-written hero and heroine movies have had another banner year in 2017. Should this surprise us? According to BoxOfficeMojo.com’s genre categories, the top five heroine movies of all time alone have grossed $2.7 billion — from Rey in The Force Awakens to Diana in Wonder Woman. When it comes to heroes, the top five films have grossed $2.4 billion — from Marvel’s The Avengers to The Dark Knight.
Jamie Vardy: 'I still feel 21' - striker focused on England and World Cup
It is never too complicated with Jamie Vardy. The striker laughs as he tells me he still feels like he is 21, but the fact is he is into his 30s and is one of the senior statesmen in an England squad that has been shorn by injuries of much of its experience. If the new faces in the squad are thinking of turning to him for advice, though, Vardy says he will direct them to Joe Hart and Gary Cahill.

Danny O’Brien discusses his new show RaconTour about his search for his missing father and talks about the hilarious and awkward family moments his quest entailed. What is RaconTour about, you ask? Well, the show is essentially a comedy of errors, On The Road-esque journey that took me all around my own country of Ireland then over the water to the Fringe on a battered, inherited, old motorbike.
From One Hundred Parts Down to One
Antennas are critical for conveying information – voice, video and/or data – across long distances. They are widely employed in commercial and military aircraft, spacecraft, satellite communications, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and by ground terminals and land-based troops. Yet the complex radio frequency (RF) components that make up an antenna system can be large and heavy, characteristics that can impact mobility and performance.

Opposition Mounting Against Garbage Plant
Juan Cales spoke at the public hearing in January about the F&G propoal to expand its waste transfer operation in the South End of Waterbury. When Cales began addressing the P&Z commission in Spanish, alderman Brenda Cotto joined him at the podium and translated. Cales emotionally implored the commission to think about the well being of the seniors and children who will be impacted by the F&G project long after the investment is made.

Albania; An Exquisite Contradiction
A shepherd near the village of Bilisht, Albania. There are an estimated 1000 Albanians from Bilisht that now live in greater Waterbury, most coming to seek economic opportunity in America. I rounded a corner in Fier, Albania, and encountered ten police officers standing on the side of the road gesturing towards me. Crap, I thought, here comes the shakedown. I pulled my rental car over and fumbled for my passport and rental agreement.
Infertility Couples Story IVF Process Funny Stories
We'll be honest. When we were young comedians and our thoughts turned to pregnancy, our main concern was how to avoid it. So when we were each finally ready to start our own families, we were surprised to find that it was not that easy. About one in 10 couples deals with infertility in some way, and we became two more couples to add to the statistic.
Victor Cuevas Gets Probation In Fraud Case, Community Support Triggers Leniency
Federal Judge Jeffrey Meyer sentenced former state representative Victor Cuevas to one-year probation and a $1000 fine for lying on a federal mortgage form. Judge Meyer said Cuevas had made an ill-advised plan to defraud a bank, but also had "remarkable support" in dozens of letters, and that "half the courtroom was bursting" in support of him. Cuevas admitted guilt on June 20th to lying on a HUD mortgage form stating a $7000 loan from life-long friend had been a gift.

A dendritic disinhibitory circuit mechanism for pathway-specific gating
A summary of all types of models used and where they are used can be found in Supplementary Table 2. For the fully reconstructed multi-compartmental pyramidal neuron model (Supplementary Fig. 1a–d), we adapted a previously developed model based on a layer 2/3 pyramidal neuron in the rat somatosensory cortex reported by Branco et al.52. We used the passive membrane parameter set; results are essentially the same with the active membrane parameter set.

Robots that Refuse to Admit Losing - A Case Study in Game Playing Using Self-Serving Bias in the Humanoid Robot MARC
The research presented in this paper is part of a wider study investigating the role cognitive bias plays in developing long-term companionship between a robot and human. In this paper we discuss how the self-serving cognitive bias can play a role in robot-human interaction. One of the robots used in this study called MARC (See Fig.) was given a series of self-serving trait behaviours such as denying own faults for failures, blaming on others and bragging.
The impact of an orthopaedic specialist registrar on A&E wait times
Meeting the four-hour wait target is a challenge for many accident and emergency (A&E) departments. We examined the effect on patient flow through our minor injury department following the introduction of a new scheme which based an orthopaedic registrar in department at peak times. This retrospective analysis of prospectively gathered data looked at 3432 patients coded with minor injuries suitable to have been seen by the registrar. We examined waiting time, time in department and final disposal.
A Farmers Road | Indiegogo
In August 2010, I was invited to a "Dinner on the Farm" at Prairie Fruits Farm and Creamery just north of Urbana-Champaign in Central Illinois. I was told the evening would be long and enjoyable with multiple courses of delicious small plates - very much in the slow food movement spirit. What I experienced, however, was much more than that. In fact, the four hours I spent on the farm that evening has resulted in a three-year journey making this documentary.
Denver eyes 3 plans to boost arts complex, parks, mall
DENVER (AP) - A trio of ambitious and likely pricey plans under development in Denver city offices could transform its prized performance complex and could add new downtown parks.
