What’s one thing that makes you feel like you’re a tourist in your own state? Stopping along the road to get a photo of yourself standing next to one of Michigan’s ‘45th Parallel’ road signs. I gotta admit, I did the same thing myself many years ago. The 45th parallel may be real, but it’s also an imaginary line – part of a latitude circle - that marks the halfway point between the North Pole and the Equator..... and it’s cool that it runs straight through Michigan.

The Most Glorious Place at Wampler’s Lake? Farm Hotel, 1920s Original

For some who have heard of this place, there are a few who mistake this as the site of the former Wampler’s Lake Pavilion...not so. This was close by, but not the same. This was the short-lived Farm Hotel, the business address listed as 1220 Wamplers Lake Road in Norvell. It is believed to have existed before the 1920s, owned and operated by George J. Nisle.

Brownie Root Beer: Made in Michigan, 1929 Original

Another favorite Michigan pop from yesteryear was Brownie Root Beer, produced by Atlas Beverage Company in 1929. Atlas was founded in Detroit by an immigrant from Poland named Walter Tomaszewski. The company did indeed bottle and sell different yummy soda pops, including Cheer-Up and Bulldog Ginger Beer, along with regular pop flavors like Club Soda, Cream, Strawberry and the like.
