15 Small Things That Make People Like You Less (Even If You’re a Good Person)
15 Small Things That Make People Like You Less (Even If You’re a Good Person) You don’t have to be rude or mean to turn people off. Sometimes it’s the little things — the stuff you don’t even realize you’re doing — that make people pull away. This isn’t about changing who you are. It’s just about being more aware. A lot of these are habits we all fall into without thinking. Here’s what to watch for: You might think you’re keeping it low-key.

New Towns Offer a Solution to Canada’s Housing Crisis
Commentary Prime Minister Mark Carney says his plan to end Canada’s interminable housing crisis is to “Build Baby Build.” We can hope. Unfortunately, Carney’s current plan is little more than a collection of unproven proposals and old policy mistakes including modular homes, boutique tax breaks, billions of taxpayer dollars in loans or subsidies, and a new federal building authority. The enormity of the task demands much broader thinking.
How New Towns Could Solve Canada’s Housing Crisis
The residential streets of Don Mills, Ontario function today as a time capsule for the hopes and dreams of Canada’s first nuclear families – and the far-sighted developer who made them happen. Located north of Toronto’s downtown, Don Mills is marked by many small ranch-style bungalows and box houses, most with garages and generously-sized yards that front onto winding, interconnected roadways. It was Canada’s first planned, self-contained suburban community set apart from existing urban locales.

Showcasing the future of green auto tech | Waterloo News
An all-Canadian electric vehicle caused a sensation when it was unveiled at the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto last month. People raved about the Arrow’s sleek, 3D-printed chassis, or gushed over its solar-panel roof and a steering wheel that can tell if a driver is in a medical emergency. But what they couldn’t see beneath those cutting-edge wonders was what makes the one-of-a-kind SUV go — something made possible by more than a year of work by engineers at the University of Waterloo.
Telephone Gap project isn’t climate friendly
Would you break up an antique chair, passed for several generations through your family, to put it into the woodstove for heat, just because it’s windy and cold outside, and you’re not motivated to go to the woodshed? Of course not. In cleaning your grandmother’s attic would you just recycle a letter from a Civil War veteran describing what surviving a battle was like? Of course not.

Engineering and health experts at the University of Waterloo are collaborating on research that may lead to breakthroughs in preventing a serious, all-too-common injury — broken bones. Their findings could prove especially important to elderly people typically more prone to falls and hip fractures. In fact, understanding the mechanics of how bones weaken over time could help serve the needs of the aging population in many parts of today’s developed world.

Skin in the game: does it matter?
In April, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) took a bold step: mandating that key employees of asset managers invest about 20% of their salary in the schemes they run or oversee. A direct order to fund managers to have skin in the game! Clients often ask me whether I have invested money in my own funds.
10 Mini Things I Avoid to Save Money and Retire Early
You can start saving money by avoiding these things. Photo by Austin Distel on Unsplash Have you ever struggled to save even if you don’t spend much? I have. I haven’t saved much until I turned 30. I realized that the reason was many small things that I was unintentionally doing. Although these items might seem small, they were adding up in the long run, and by avoiding them, I was able to save a lot of money and accelerate my retirement.
A day in the life of a fund manager in lockdown
What does a fund manager do during lockdown? 5:30AM – Wake up I vary my mornings and either do some Pilates in the living room, high-intensity circuit training, or some reading to digest what happened the day before and prepare myself for what’s ahead. Today is going to be a particularly busy day for me, so I take some time out early in the day to help me get in the zone.
How long will fiscal stimulus last?
Markets are becoming increasingly optimistic about fiscal spending, but we are sceptical that this can continue indefinitely. The US midterm elections may draw out fiscal hawks. Part of the current market narrative is that record fiscal spending is becoming engrained in people’s expectations. It is a flirtation with Modern Monetary Theory, which broadly says governments can spend heavily as long as inflation remains contained.
15 Mini Things That Can Instantly Make You Less Likable
But many people still keep doing these. Photo by Mimi Thian on Unsplash You applied for your dream job, everything went well in the interview, but you still got a rejection? You went on a date with somebody, and you thought there was a great connection, but they still ghosted you? You were in a social circle that you loved, but they have started not inviting you to future events out of the blue? These all happened to me, and I found out that my likability was the reason.
The Super Bowl Indicator: will equities Buc up?
For many years, the winner of the Super Bowl seemed to set the market’s direction. So can we read anything into yesterday’s result? It was the Super Bowl yesterday, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking on the Kansas City Chiefs. The long-shot Buccaneers were the comfortable winners. Tom Brady, their 43-year-old quarterback, won his seventh title – more than any individual franchise in the Super Bowl’s history. Students of financial markets might be unusually interested in the result.

Tundra swans remind us of nature’s wonders
By John RoeSpecial to Waterloo Region Record Sat., April 4, 2020timer4 min. read Whatever else COVID-19 has cancelled this year, it has not cancelled the annual northern migration of the tundra swans. From America’s eastern seaboard to the marshlands of Lake Erie, through the snow-melt flooded fields of southern Ontario and onward across the prairies to the high Arctic, they have been on the move for weeks.
Opinion | Worshipping online in a time of pandemic
Last Sunday I did something I hadn't done since COVID-19 basically shut down Canada. I attended a church service. I knew the regular places of worship — including mine in Kitchener — had been ordered closed and that gatherings of more than 50 people were prohibited. But more than ever, I needed a few minutes of calm, reflection and contemplation. I needed a reminder there's more to this world than a worldwide pandemic.
Great expectations
Memories of high inflation have faded; what does this collective amnesia mean for inflation in the future? Inflation expectations have drifted lower because society is forgetting about inflation. Indeed, a whole generation has grown up knowing nothing but price stability. This makes it harder for central banks to hit their inflation targets, particularly in Europe where more southerly countries' inflation 'memory' has been subsumed by Germany's experience. But this has not always been the case.

Here we go again
Our medium-term view on markets is changing. Recession probabilities are increasing and trade wars are not helping. This makes us shy away from buying during market dips and move towards selling equities when they strengthen. There are plenty of times when you wish you had kept your mouth shut rather than making a market prediction. But sometimes you kick yourself for not committing an expectation to writing.

The day 400 angry Canadian soldiers rioted in a peaceful English town
By John Roe The Rifleman is a cozy if rather ordinary English pub south of London, but it serves a beer with an extraordinary story. If you walk into the establishment and order a pint of Sergeant Green bitter, you’ll hear how the drink is named for a brave but luckless Metropolitan police officer who was killed when 400 angry Canadian soldiers went on a rampage here, in the suburban town of Epsom 100 years ago.

Throwing in the Powell: implications of the Fed policy shift
The US central bank has made a dramatic about-turn in its policy stance. We look at what this means for the US economy and markets. Jerome Powell has just executed the monetary policy equivalent of a screeching handbrake turn. After suggesting late last year that interest rate hikes and balance sheet reduction were on a pre-set path – helping to prompt a torrid December for risk assets – the Chair of the US Federal Reserve this week reversed course.
Opinion | Hearing first hand about war horrors enough for me
They terrified me. The second war had been over nearly two decades. My cub master had fought in Korea in the 1950s. But always, the Cold War loomed in the background like an unwelcome, uninvited intruder. I remember, during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, when a teacher at my elementary school taught us how to duck beneath our wooden desks if the atomic bombs started falling. When I was 12, I joined the air cadets, learned to march and become a passable marksman with a rifle.
