Congress must investigate the blowing up of drug boats Original
President Trump has taken the counter-drug fight out of the realm of law enforcement and into the world of armed combat. In so doing, he may have fired the opening shot in an undeclared war on Venezuela. The administration argues that 100,000 American deaths per year from cocaine and fentanyl overdose constitutes an existential terrorist threat, and this makes a boat allegedly smuggling illicit drugs a legitimate target for deadly military force.

We weren't ready for a pandemic - imagine a crippling cyberattack
Amid the tumult surrounding the coronavirus, it is now crystal clear that an existential threat can engulf our entire nation with a speed and level of impact that we previously believed was impossible. It does not matter that we are the United States of America, that we are the most technologically and, in this case, medically advanced nation in the world, or that we are the strongest and wealthiest.
Escalation of Cyber Warfare Puts US Electric Grid in Crosshairs
With news of recent cyber developments involving Russia and Iran, the U.S. is now on a cyberwar footing with the two confrontational nations. The new battleground is electric supply systems – the electric grid in Russia, and the electricity-driven military command and control networks in Iran.
Avoiding the Next Black Swan
We think of our electrical system as steady and reliable and take for granted that it will always be there. But it isn’t. Recent estimates of annual losses due to electrical outages range from $79 billion to more than $200 billion per year. Most are caused by localized weather events. That suggests an element of frailty rather than reliability and resilience. We are beginning to see the grid as a single point of failure that cuts across every aspect of our economy.
