When the National Basketball League (NBL) regular season concluded on June 14 at the YMCA in Wandegeya, the unofficial communication had been that the post-season playoff quarter-finals would kick off on June 17. But that did not materialize, as focus turned to the national teams’ engagements in France, Angola and Nigeria. This meant that all domestic matters were put on hold.

The Federation of International Basketball Associations (Fiba) Africa for the 2027 Fiba Basketball World Cup resume on July 2 with the second round of group fixtures. Uganda’s Silverbacks face a daunting task after losing all three of their Group D matches in February. Defeats to Angola (90-68), Mali (84-73) and Egypt (91-52) left them bottom of the standings behind those three sides, making the upcoming games a make-or-break test for their hopes of reaching next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

The Toyota Buffaloes will be hoping that when the curtains come down on the Nile Special Rugby Premiership 2026 season this Saturday, June 27, at the King’s Park arena, in Bweyogerere, it will be them dancing in celebration. Perhaps, the imagination is that the late Bob Marley song, Buffalos soldier, will be blasting in the background, as they receive the winners’ medals. If that were to play out, no doubt it would inevitably be a surreal moment for Buffaloes, who have never won a league title.
