Cascading magmatic unrest and aseismic faulting in the Aegean Sea enabled by elastic stress relay
Abstract INTRODUCTION RESULTS DISCUSSION MATERIALS AND METHODS Acknowledgments Supplementary Materials REFERENCES Information & Authors Metrics & Citations View Options References Figures Tables Media Share This article has 0 eLetter . Abstract Magma reservoirs commonly exist in clusters and situate within complex fault networks, yet sequential triggering of unrest at multiple reservoirs and faults is rarely observed.
Tirzepatide and the NHS: are we creating a two-tier obesity treatment system?
Obesity is a global health crisis and is associated with significant health risks, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes (T2D), and cancer. The NHS’s 12-year phased rollout of tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) represents a paradox in obesity care; while creating options for effective obesity care, its implementation risks exacerbating already serious health inequalities.
Association between diabetes self‐management education attendance, hospital admissions and mortality in type 2 diabetes: A cohort analysis protocol
1 INTRODUCTION Diabetes is a complex condition leading to disability and premature mortality with 7000 excess deaths in the United Kingdom in 2022.1 The International Diabetes Federation estimates 537 million people are living with diabetes globally2 of whom approximately 4.3 million reside in the United Kingdom.3 Over 90% have type 2 diabetes, with an increased prevalence in areas with high deprivation, poor healthcare access, poorer housing, reduced finances and lower educational...

User Name Password Remember Me
Weight-loss jabs can cut risk of heart attacks or strokes
As part of its Select trial, the company recruited 17,604 adults over the age of 45 from across 41 countries. Each patient had a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or over and established cardiovascular disease, with no history of diabetes. Researchers found that the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients given a 2.4mg once-weekly dose of Wegovy, alongside standard care for the prevention of heart attacks or stroke, reduced by 20 per cent compared with those given a placebo drug.

The magmatic web beneath Hawai‘i
The structures responsible for transporting magma from the upper mantle to crustal storage chambers have great influence on the dynamical behavior of a volcanic system. These transport structures also encode details about the processes that created them, and therefore document the system’s history and evolution.

Corticosteroid treatment and the consequences for glucose control
Glucocorticoids, which include long-acting corticosteroid preparations such as prednisolone and dexamethasone, are frequently used to treat inflammatory conditions such as asthma and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other conditions including many autoimmune diseases, and also to reduce cerebral edema in association with brain tumors.
What the rising level of obesity says about the food system
It is the crudest expression of global dysfunction that the world produces enough food to feed us all, yet undernutrition and obesity coexist. © Getty What the rising level of obesity says about the food system In 2021, nearly half the global population is affected by malnutrition in one of its forms. And while it remains shocking to see a growing number of children stunted from undernourishment, the balance has shifted: more deaths result from overweight and obesity globally than underweight.

Once-Weekly Semaglutide in Adults with Overweight or Obesity
Introduction QUICK TAKE Weekly Semaglutide in Adults with Overweight or Obesity Obesity is a chronic disease and global public health challenge.1-3 Obesity can lead to insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia,4 is associated with complications such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease,2,5 and reduces life expectancy.6 More recently, obesity has been linked to increased numbers of hospitalizations, the need for mechanical ventilation, and...
Once-Weekly Semaglutide in Adults with Overweight or Obesity
Article Figures/Media Metrics Related Articles Abstract Background Obesity is a global health challenge with few pharmacologic options. Whether adults with obesity can achieve weight loss with once-weekly semaglutide at a dose of 2.4 mg as an adjunct to lifestyle intervention has not been confirmed. Weight loss is the major player in bariatric surgery benefits
A metabolic study comparing people who lost weight through dieting or through bariatric surgery shows that the effects on diabetes are due to weight loss. References 1. Lim, E. L. et al. Cardiovascular outcome trials in obesity: A review
Summary Obesity is a global epidemic associated with over 200 health complications and a significant risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), partly by increasing classical risk factors such as lipid and glucose levels and blood pressure. Weight loss through lifestyle interventions, pharmacotherapy and/or bariatric surgery improves CV risk factors. Cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) of anti‐obesity medications aim to evaluate the CV safety and benefits of pharmacotherapy.

SGLT2 inhibitors and urinary tract infections
Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are a fairly new class of treatment for diabetes mellitus. Some data suggest SGLT2 inhibitors are associated with a risk of severe urinary tract infections. However, meta-analyses of trials and a large population-based cohort study show no increased risk, which provides important reassurance for patients and prescribers. References 1. Zelniker, T. Weight loss variability with SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP‐1 receptor agonists in type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity: Mechanistic possibilities
Summary We are facing a global epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Weight loss, in the context of obesity and type 2 diabetes, may improve glycaemic control and weight‐related comorbidities, and in some cases, induce diabetes remission. Although lifestyle‐based weight loss strategies may be initially successful, most are not effective long‐term. There is an increasing need to consider pharmacological approaches to assist weight loss in diabetes‐obesity.
