NFL primetime viewership lower in Week 4
The lights were less bright in Week 4 of the NFL season. The latest edition of NFL “Monday Night Football” (Falcons-Saints) averaged 11.9 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, including local over-the-air simulcasts in the home markets — down 8% from the average for ESPN-only games last season (12.9M).
WNBA momentum continues into playoffs after milestone regular season
Caitlin Clark’s return to the playoffs helped the WNBA extend its momentum from a milestone regular season. Sunday’s Fever-Aces first round WNBA playoff Game 1 averaged a 1.2 rating and 2.11 million viewers on ABC, marking the largest WNBA playoff audience on the broadcast network, and the third-largest across all networks since 2000.
NFL Kickoff viewership down, Australia game flat
The NFL season got off to a ho-hum start in the ratings by the league’s lofty standards. Last Wednesday’s Patriots-Seahawks NFL Kickoff Game averaged 25.1 million viewers on NBC — a Nielsen-only figure that includes NBC’s first party data — down from last year’s combined figure of 28.3 million across a Nielsen-only linear audience (23.3M) and streaming viewership tracked by Adobe Analytics (4.9M).
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert to retire at end of year
The most criticized commissioner in all of sports, Cathy Engelbert of the WNBA, is stepping down. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert will retire at the end of the season, ending a tumultuous, oft-criticized tenure in which the league reached new heights of popularity, the league announced Friday. ESPN’s Alexa Phillipou had previously reported the news on social media.
Linda Cohn talks her ESPN exit and future plans on the SMW Podcast

Brazil-Morocco dominant viewership draw as World Cup continues hot start Original
After milestone audiences for Mexico last Thursday and the United States on Friday, Brazil kept the momentum going into the first weekend of the FIFA World Cup. Saturday’s Brazil-Morocco FIFA World Cup match averaged 11.2 million viewers on Telemundo (combining a Nielsen-measured linear audience and streaming viewership tracked by Adobe Analytics), plus a Nielsen-measured 10.02 million on FOX.
Why NFL and NBA should see Christmas gains, despite headwinds
“And when Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer.” So goes the apocryphal line popularized by Hans Gruber in the holiday classic “Die Hard.” Perhaps his borderline-namesake, NFL executive Hans Schroeder, knew the same feeling after seeing the viewership for his league’s Thanksgiving Day games — in particular the Chiefs-Cowboys matchup that delivered more than 57 million on CBS.
USA Sports not looking at leagues like NFL, exec Hong says
USA Sports, the newest entrant into the sports rights marketplace, is setting realistic expectations for life as an independent cable entity.
Monday musings: Why MLB is hot and the NBA is cool
Sports Media Watch presents thoughts on recent events in the industry, starting with a look at how Major League Baseball and the NBA compare in ratings and media coverage at a time of transition for both. One of the more interesting dichotomies in sports media is between the perceptions of the NBA and Major League Baseball, the two leagues out of the “Big Four” that are closest to each other in television viewership and total revenue.
The Needle: The ratings game enters arcade mode
Welcome back to “The Needle,” a ratings-focused column on Sports Media Watch that will break down the numbers, attempt to put some context behind the data, and discuss broader trends in measurement and television viewing. There was once a time when the ratings were pretty easy to discuss. Nielsen’s methodology had not meaningfully changed in decades, and aside from population increases, a viewership figure in 2013 was not too different than in 1993. More importantly, ratings were a niche topic.
Monday musings: The indispensable, unavoidable ESPN
Sports Media Watch presents thoughts on recent events in the industry, starting with a look at what ESPN’s aggressive content buildup means for its new direct-to-subscriber service. ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro has said that ESPN’s new direct-to-subscriber option is meant to attract those viewers who are “sitting on the sidelines,” outside of the cable bundle. But are the network’s various enticements enough to attract cost-conscious fans?
Apple, under contract through 2028, said to lose Friday MLB package to NBC
If the latest reporting is to be believed, the year-long game of MLB musical chairs could end up with Apple unexpectedly losing its rights three years early. NBCUniversal is in line to acquire both ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” and Apple TV’s package of Friday night games, according to Kendall Baker of Yahoo Sports.
New details on how MLB might split expiring ESPN package
The saga of ESPN’s expiring MLB rights package involves four contenders — and perhaps more — vying for different pieces of the pie. MLB is in active negotiations with ESPN, Comcast-owned NBCUniversal, Apple and Netflix on the expiring ESPN rights package, and it is possible that other platforms could enter the mix, Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reported Thursday.
NBA announces first Prime Video games
The NBA will begin its streaming-exclusive era with the Celtics, Knicks and Lakers. Amazon Prime Video will begin its NBA run with a doubleheader of Celtics-Knicks and Timberwolves-Lakers on Friday, October 24, it was announced Wednesday, marking the first NBA games ever carried exclusively via a streaming service.
Post-NBA TNT extends Parker, Lefkoe; adds CFB role for LaForce
A few familiar names from the NBA on TNT are sticking around, in one form or another, for the network’s post-NBA future. TNT Sports announced Wednesday that it has struck contract extensions with studio host Adam Lefkoe and basketball analyst Candace Parker, who along with Allie LaForce will take on new roles on the network’s new college sports packages.
Monday musings: Revisiting the resilience (resurgence?) of cable
Sports Media Watch presents thoughts on recent events in the industry, starting with a follow-up on the resilient cable model. When asked by Bryan Curtis of The Ringer Monday morning how he would describe ESPN, the network’s president Jimmy Pitaro responded with one word: “Multiplatform.” “We are not just a network,” he added.
ESPN, NFL, officially announce agreement on sale of NFL Media
There is still a long way to go before it goes into effect, but the sale of NFL Network and RedZone to ESPN has officially been announced. ESPN and the NFL said Tuesday evening that they have reached a “non-binding agreement” under which ESPN will acquire NFL Network, linear rights to NFL RedZone and additional NFL Media properties in exchange for the NFL taking a ten percent equity stake in the network.

TNT NASCAR average within range of Prime, trails FS1
In its return to NASCAR, TNT Sports averaged about as many viewers as the sport’s other newcomer this season, Prime Video. The five-race NASCAR package on TNT Sports averaged 2.1 million viewers, slightly lower than the preceding five races on Amazon Prime Video. Both TNT and Prime came in under the eight-race FS1 portion of the season, which averaged 2.5 million — but also benefited from taking place during the higher-viewed early portion of the season.
NBC hires McGrady as latest studio analyst
NBC has added another early 2000s NBA star to its NBA studio roster. NBC Sports has hired Tracy McGrady as an NBA studio analyst, it was announced Tuesday. McGrady, who previously worked as an analyst for ESPN’s “The Jump,” will appear in-studio at least once a week through the playoffs. McGrady joins an NBC studio roster that includes his cousin and former teammate Vince Carter.
MLS commissioner offers rare disclosure of Apple TV viewership
MLS commissioner Don Garber provided a rare window into the league’s viewership on Apple TV. At a press conference ahead of Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game, Garber said MLS matches on MLS Season Pass this season are averaging 120,000 unique viewers, an increase of 50 percent from last year, according to multiple reporters in attendance.
Shannon Sharpe lawsuit settled
The sexual assault lawsuit against Shannon Sharpe has apparently been resolved. ESPN contributor Shannon Sharpe has reached a settlement with the woman accusing him of sexual assault, the latter’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee, said on social media Friday.
NBA has most-watched opening weekend of playoffs since 2000
Aided by a bounce from Easter out-of-home viewing, the NBA Playoffs opened at a 25-year high. The opening weekend of the NBA Playoffs averaged 4.4 million viewers across ESPN/ABC and TNT Sports, up 17% from last year and the highest average for the first weekend of play since 2000, when games averaged 4.9 million across NBC and TNT.
Cowboys still drawing eyeballs as season runs aground
Despite a lopsided 34-6 rout — or perhaps in part because of it — the Cowboys delivered a larger audience than last year (and last week). Sunday’s NFL national window on CBS (mostly Eagles-Cowboys) averaged an 11.9 rating and 24.61 million viewers, up from the same window in Week 10 last year, which aired on FOX and featured the Cowboys against the Giants (11.0, 21.73M). Viewership also increased over coverage on FOX the prior week that featured Lions-Packers in most markets (24.2M).

Boss Jon Lewis expects England’s spinners to do ‘bulk of work’ at T20 World Cup
PA Wire Head coach Jon Lewis expects a lauded spin attack to carry out the “bulk of the work” when England target Women’s T20 World Cup glory. England will travel to the United Arab Emirates spearheaded by four front-line spinners, with Linsey Smith, who returned to the international T20 fold earlier this year, joining Sophie Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn and Charlie Dean in a 15-strong squad captained by Heather Knight.
Caitlin Clark WNBA Debut Averages 2.13M Viewers, Most-Watched WNBA Game Since 2001
The NBA superstar journey inevitably encounters a situation like Nikola Jokic has faced against the Wolves where their burgeoning legacies are perilously threatened. Kel'el Ware has stretch center potential, while also possessing a floor as a playable rim-runner, which says a lot about him as a prospect. Minnesota's defensive effort in Game 2 was a transformative sight.
Kings-Pelicans Play-In Game Averages 2.57M Viewers

Takeaways from NBA All-Star Weekend
Sports Media Watch was on-site at NBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis. Here are some takeaways from the three-day extravaganza. Inside an NBA “bubble” NBA All-Star Weekend is emblematic of the phrase ‘you had to be there.’ In person, it is a three-day basketball expo and family reunion — an NBA-Con if one will — in which one is liable to ride in an elevator with Andre Iguodala or spot Gheorghe Muresan coming out of one.
