Walmart to bump worker pay; Q4 sales up

Walmart to bump worker pay; Q4 sales up

supermarketnews.com — Wal-Mart Stores on Thursday announced details of a plan to overhaul its approach to hiring, training, scheduling and compensation, including a plan that would raise its entry level pay to $9 an hour and increase wages for current associates to at least $10 per hour by next year. The program will help Walmart keep pace with a wave of state legislation advocating increases in wages and a concurrent call to raise the federal minimum wage above its current level of $7.25 per hour, while also ...

Wegmans to build Brooklyn site

supermarketnews.com — Wegmans Food Markets has been selected as an anchor tenant for a $140 million development at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a move that will bring the Rochester, N.Y.-based fresh supermarket chain to New York City for the first time, officials said Wednesday. Construction of the project - which will require the demolition of several existing buildings among the Navy Yard's Admiral Row - will begin later this year. The 74,000-square-foot supermarket is expected to open in 2018, according to the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp., the quasi-government agency overseeing development at the former military shipbuilding facility.

Instacart: Trojan Horse or retailer's best friend?

supermarketnews.com — Sam Mogannam's Bi-Rite grocery stores in San Francisco have dedicated shoppers and a great reputation for quality, but they're not without significant challenges. Expensive real estate and dense city neighborhoods made store expansion next to impossible, and for as much as shoppers admire Bi-Rite, a lack of available parking limited store traffic and curtailed basket sizes. "A year and a half ago, when we laid out our goals, one of them was to improve our guests' ... Why Subscribe To SN Digital Access? Observers skeptical as Fairway plans downsize

supermarketnews.com — Fairway Markets, the New York fresh grocer whose new ads encourage shoppers to "eat big and live large" is tightening its belt and thinking small. The company announced this week that it was delaying construction of at least two planned stores in Manhattan and would instead focus on a 40,000-square-foot store expected to open next year in the quiet Brooklyn neighborhood of Georgetown. That store - to take the place of a former Waldbaums - will cost considerably less to build and operate than typical Fairway units, and, officials said, would not be expected to draw sales from existing Fairway stores.

Desert Island Mix Tape — Dee Snider probably doesn't need 400 pages to convince anyone that behind the lingerie and stage makeup he's just another kid from Long Island with oversized ambition and bravado but you also shouldn't be surprised that he uses them all. His new-ish biography SHUT UP AND GIVE ME THE MIC tells the story of Dee from his high-school choir to Twisted Sister's rise and fall to whatever it is he's doing today with plenty of good humor, a lot of shout-outs to those who helped him along, and a little bit of the obligatory score-settling.

A division of Ahold known as Fresh Formats LLC is advertising for employees for a new small-format fresh food store to be located in the Boston neighborhood of Allston. Want ads appearing online describe the venture as "a new Fresh Food market that is small in size but BIG on fresh, organic & value." The Beach Boys' Discography - A Guided Tour

www.modernsuperior.com — Dan Gorman: Recently, with some warmer weather on my mind, I found myself on a bit of a Beach Boys kick. While creating myself a playlist of underrated Beach Boys tunes on Rdio (mostly from the post- Smiley Smile era), a friend reached out and tipped me off to a project he had run on the site a few years back. Over the course of a month, he and many others listened to one Beach Boys album a day and discussed the band within a handful of playlists they had created.

Desert Island Mix Tape — Sometime in Junior High Bob moved to town from Los Angeles and brought a lot of exciting things with him. He dressed differently -- corduroy OP shorts, and surf hoodies from Pier Connection. The music he liked was fresh and at times impossibly exotic for a suburban Long Islander like me -- names I heard for the first time, like Black Flag and Oingo Boingo, and those I was only scantly familiar with, like Devo and the Police. Bob's house adjoined woods at the harbor and we spent a summer exploring back there.

Muller on Bottom Dollar: 'We are not a discounter'

supermarketnews.com — Delhaize threw everything it had at making the Bottom Dollar concept work before concluding that discounting "wasn't in our DNA," CEO Frans Muller told SN in a recent interview. The company late last year sold all 66 of Bottom Dollar's locations, located mainly in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh markets, to Aldi for $15 million, and retired the banner, signaling the end of a nearly 10-year experiment with a hard discount format. Although Bottom Dollar at one time was seen as a major growth vehicle for Brussels-based Delhaize Group, Muller said the company was unable to master the economics in the same manner as rivals like Aldi, despite having created a format he described as well run and well liked by shoppers.

supermarketnews.com — The Bay Area has Silicon Valley. New York has Silicon Alley. Northwest Arkansas has... "The Silicon Alley of Retail," suggests Ted Rubin, the former CMO of Collective Bias. Based in Bentonville, Ark., Collective Bias describes itself as a social shopper media company that connects consumer goods companies and retailers to a network of bloggers and social-media influencers who in turn help them execute their branded campaigns. The company, named to a list of the 25 "most promising" small companies of 2014 by Forbes, is one of several growing retail- food- and logistics-related tech startups in the region, which not coincidentally is dominated by a somewhat larger concern that's also made a name for itself in the retail, food and logistics fields: Wal-Mart Stores.

supermarketnews.com — Family Dollar's day of reckoning came only weeks ago. The Matthews, N.C.-based retailer, facing declining comps and increased competition, seeking a cash-constrained shopper in a continued bad economic environment for them, moved forward on a decision to abandon a practice of primarily driving traffic to stores with promotions, and rededicate itself to offering lower prices every day.
