Smart Power for Agile Robots: Integrated Motor Control, Thermal Management, and Energy Flow
Robots are becoming smaller, lighter, and more agile, while also moving faster, handling heavier payloads, and running longer on constrained power budgets. That combination forces designers to squeeze motor control and power electronics into tight spaces where every watt, square millimeter, and degree Celsius matters.
Smart Power in Compact Spaces: Rethinking Motor Control for Robotics
Robotics engineers rarely complain about having too much space. If anything, the opposite is true. Every new generation of robotic systems is expected to be lighter, smaller, faster, and more capable than the one before it. Whether the application involves industrial automation, warehouse logistics, medical equipment, or collaborative robots, the pressure to shrink form factors continues to increase.
Revamp Outdoor Power Gear With Smart Battery Monitoring and Motor Control
Battery powered lawn and garden tools are steadily replacing their noisy gasoline-powered counterparts, thanks to the high performance of lithium-based batteries. To satisfy the demand for higher power and longer runtime, battery pack voltage and capacity are steadily increasing. However, high energy density and small form factors create significant challenges for equipment designers, the foremost of which is product safety.
Semiconductor Circuit Breakers: SiC JFETs and Combo-FETs
This session explores the motivations for migrating from electromechanical circuit breakers to semiconductor-based circuit breakers (SCBs). Circuit breaker designers have faced significant challenges in replacing electromechanical breakers with SCBs in existing breaker panels, making such replacements impractical until recently.
Revolutionizing Circuit Protection With SiC JFETs
This article is published by EEPower as part of an exclusive digital content partnership with Bodo’s Power Systems. The mid-20th century saw significant innovation in residential and industrial electrical systems. One of the most impactful advancements was the transition from traditional replaceable fuses to miniature circuit breakers (MCB). While fuses provided basic protection, they had to be replaced after they blew. Circuit breakers, on the other hand, could be easily reset after tripping.

SiC JFETs for a Perfect Switch
Silicon Carbide (SiC) JFETs are robust, with high-energy avalanche and short-circuit withstand ratings, and significantly, they beat all other technologies for the FOM on-resistance per unit die area RDS(on) × A, achieving a value close to the theoretical limit for the material (Figure 1). This figure of merit directly relates to the practical performance of the switch and its economy, with more die per wafer for comparable performance than competing technologies. Can we do better still?

Experts from EPC and Texas Instruments explain why GaN dominates humanoid robot motor drive design at the joint level. At 800V, the front-end protection slot is largely unsolved. Menlo Micro argues that metal-contact MEMS is the answer. Power Integrations brings GaN to its 3-billion-unit TOPSwitch family, extending flyback power limits to 440 W. Electric vehicle power systems are pushing higher voltages to achieve faster charging and better efficiency.
Building efficient bidirectional power converters using wide-bandgap devices
Bio Email This Print Comment Many power conversion tasks involve taking an input voltage and turning it into a different output voltage, which has often been stabilized, converted from AC to DC (or vice versa), and then given galvanic isolation. This is what happens when you use an AC mains adaptor to charge your phone with DC, or an inverter to turn DC from a car battery into an AC mains supply.
How Wide-Bandgap Devices Add Value in Bidirectional Power Conversion
Download this article in PDF format. Most applications for power conversion involve a raw supply to be processed to a different stabilized voltage, often with galvanic isolation. Typical scenarios may include ac mains power-converted to low-voltage dc in a laptop adapter, or a discharging battery voltage in portable equipment boosted to a constant higher value.
SEGA Wants Dreamcast Games on the Switch
With SEGA AGES on the way, a lot of Sega fans are excited to be able to play their favorites on the Nintendo Switch. Sega hopes to bring a large number of their titles to the Nintendo Switch. The selection of titles they plan on bringing back so far is their more popular titles from before the Dreamcast, with a few small fan favorites from the Dreamcast.
How silicon carbide helps to get the best from a solar PV system
With all the emphasis on inverter efficiency, why is the physical limit to solar panel conversion efficiency (solar insolation to electrical power) is around 30% with current technology? At the moment, the maximum reached in a lab is about 26.5% and production panel efficiency typically ranges from 17 to 21%, with potential improvements centered around careful mechanical design to minimize ‘cell shading’ and to collect every possible photon available.
Hybrid Cascodes Simplify SiC Adoption in Popular Power Circuits
Wide-bandgap (WBG) power semiconductors—and silicon-carbide (SiC) devices in particular—can help significantly improve the energy efficiency and reliability of various types of power converters. These include inverters for use cases such as electric vehicles, renewable-energy micro-generators, and data-center power supplies.
